Chapter 7

I’m more than ready for round two. Seeing Quinn in my store had shocked the hell out of me, but that had just been the beginning. He’d made it clear what he wanted, and I wasn't going to lie—it turned me on. So had the way he seemed almost shy to tell me how he really felt. It was that whole dichotomy of Quinn thing, the thing that drove me crazy about him. One minute he was straightforward and the next I had no clue where he was coming from, but it was like he could read my mind and he told me exactly what I needed to hear. Just like today. He had let me know where he stood, and I couldn't blame him for using Olivia or Tanner as an excuse to talk to me. I would have done the same thing if I’d any more guts or if I'd even thought that Quinn was interested in the slightest.

It still blew my mind.

I checked my hair in the mirror one more time before snagging my keys and heading outside. And guess who was standing at my car? Olivia. She wore a smirk and had one eyebrow arched.

“So,” she said. “Date number two?”

“Technically, date number one. The first was just a—”

“A meeting. Yeah, I know,” she said rolling her eyes. Are you okay with this?”

“Having dinner?’ I asked, stepping closer to the car and waiting for her to move aside so I could hop in.

“You know what I mean,” she said. Instead of moving, she folded her arms. “I mean about the date. About Quinn. You feel good about him?”

“It’s a first date,” I told her automatically, so I wouldn’t have to say anything else. It wasn’t entirely true. Of course I needed to get to know Quinn better, but I knew more about him than anyone probably suspected because I’d been watching him since high school. There were also small bits and pieces of the man he’d become that I was still curious about. But if she meant attraction, I was already way beyond that. Quinn was smoking hot and I didn’t need any more encouragement in that area. In fact, if that was all this was, then I didn’t need to know more.

But I was hoping it could be more than just a physical attraction.

“Listen,” I told her, reaching out to put my hands on her shoulders. “I know you've been trying to take care of me since Mom died. And you've done a good job. But I'm an adult now and I have to do these things on my own sometimes—or I'll never get anywhere in life.”

And that was the entire truth. I'd held myself back from so many things because I'd been scared or shy or predisposed to relying on someone else. First my mom, now my sister. I loved living in my small town and doing what I did, but I needed something more. And this was a chance.

“I'm going to go and hopefully have a good time and see what comes of it.
