Something woke me up in the middle of the night. My room was silent, though my ears still pricked. Finally, I heard it.
The sound of a bed creaking and voices coming from Orion's room.
My heart sped up. I was now wide awake as I listened more closely.
I realized I heard only one voice— Orion's. It was muffled through the wall so I couldn't make out his words, but that creaking sounded like he was jumping on the bed or something.
Or something.
I remained still for a moment, waiting to see if the noise would let up. For all I knew, he was a sleep talker and just thrashing around in his bed.
The creaking and his voice went on for at least a full minute with no sign of stopping. It was hard to make out his tone, but I got the sense that he was angry at whoever he was talking to.
When it went on for another minute without stopping, I pushed back the covers and got up from the bed. My parents' master bedroom was upstairs and Ryan was on the other side of me, so it was most likely just me who could hear him. I'd knock softly and let him know he woke me up, then go back to bed.
The sounds became clearer as I stepped outside my door and hovered just outside Orion's room. He was definitely angry, although trying to keep quiet. He muttered harsh growls, curses, and what sounded like, "leave me alone".
I stood frozen outside his door, every part of me wanting to run back in my room and just shove my head under a pillow. Whether it was sleep talking or something else, I didn't want to be the one dealing with a pissed off wolf.
"No!" Orion yelped, louder than anything he said before. Then quieter, "please stop."
My heart crashed against my sternum, the only part of me that moved. Only then it occurred to me that he might really be in trouble. Something could be actually hurting him. But shit! What could I do?
The thing I knew best.
Treading lightly back to my room, I opened my gun locker with trembling hands. I'd never had to shoot a live target before, and now the fear and adrenaline nearly kept me from loading my most trusted rifle.
My weapon in position, I crept back to Orion's room. His bed still creaked and he still growled and snarled against… something. I kept my hands as steady as possible as I carefully pushed his door ajar with my gun barrel.
It opened easily, meaning he hadn't closed his door all the way. Squinting in the dark, I pushed the door until it was open a few inches so I could survey the threat inside the room. And what I saw left me dumbfounded.
Orion was indeed naked down to his boxer briefs, but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy the sight of him. He was thrashing around in bed, but no one was with him.
"Stop," he groaned, grabbing at his silvery hair hard enough to pull it out.
