Filming resumed the next day, and I got to see it up close now that I was Janice’s assistant. The crew got used to me tripping over cords and bumping into things because I was finally contributing. My eidetic memory, which had made me such an oddity to the kids I’d grown up with, was perfect for spotting inconsistencies between takes. Janice had come to rely on me, and the directors relied on her. Thus, I was finally a contributing member of the production.
And being up front and center meant I got to see Grayson a lot more. But seeing was all I was able to do. We rarely got a chance to be together. Sure, we’d shared a few stolen moments when we’d been able to find a secluded office—or once even a broom closet. Still, we’d had few chances to talk. Or make out. His kisses still lit me on fire, brought me from zero to sixty in an instant. But mostly, I only saw him when he was doing a scene.
Being part of the crew was fun. Watching Grayson act was fun. Seeing him with Tessa was not.
There was no doubt she liked him. I could see it every time she looked at him. She wasn’t that good of an actress to be just pretending. I knew nothing about acting, but even I could see she wasn’t all that good. But she was young and gorgeous with a figure that put mine to shame. There were fan websites dedicated to her, and people didn’t seem to care that she wasn’t the best actress in the world.
I couldn’t blame her for liking Grayson. Millions upon millions of women did—myself included. But I didn’t like the way she threw herself at him every chance she got. Wanting to rehearse lines with him all the time. Never letting him out of her sight on set. He said she’d even shown up at his home one day. I didn’t even know where he lived.
On a Wednesday afternoon, Janice handed me a stack of notes and told me to take them to Room 312.
“Where’s that?” I still got lost in the huge studio.
“In the back wing. It’s a bit of a hike. Take your time.” She turned to go, but not before I saw a hint of a smile on her lips. That didn’t make much sense.
After three wrong turns, I was finally standing outside the room. I knocked on the door, and a very familiar voice answered. “Come in.”
Now it was my turn to grin as I rushed inside. Grayson was standing in the middle of a small conference room. Dishes and plates were set up on the table behind him.
“Care to join me in a late lunch?”
Nodding, I dropped Janice’s notes on a side table and moved into his embrace. Nothing in the world felt better than his arms around me—except when he kissed me. Which he did now. Quite thoroughly.
When we finally broke apart, I smiled up at him. “This is much nicer than a broom closet.
