Cassie had fallen asleep in my arms, Biscuit in hers. Clapper was sleeping at my feet. To say I’d never felt more complete was an understatement. Ellie and Andy offered us their spare room. I probably could’ve driven the boat home, but after everything Cassie had been through I didn’t want to wake her.

She curled into my chest and murmured when I carried her to the spare bedroom. It didn’t matter that it was a double bed, I didn’t want any space between us. Hell, I could’ve curled up on the sofa with Cassie and been content. Knowing that at any moment she could remember, or – a chill ran through my body – that someone would come looking for her; that she could be gone from my life at any second – it made me want to cherish every minute I had with her.

Shannon had sent a couple of emails asking if she could go ahead with the DNA, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Not yet, anyway.

Cassie curled onto her side and I smoothed her hair off her face, noticing for the first time that she had roots growing in. Could she have dyed it to change her appearance? I would have to wait until the morning to see if she remembered being a blond.

As the little spoon, she fit perfectly into my body and I inhaled her hair as I snuggled in behind her. Biscuit hopped onto the bed, missing on her first attempt but landing on her second. She snuggled in front of Cassie’s belly. She seemed to know that Cassie had saved her life.

Nodding off to sleep, I decided I couldn’t worry about the future with Cassie. I had to stay in the moment, and enjoy every second I had with the most beautiful woman I’d ever known.

I wasn’t sure what time it was, but at some point in the night, Cassie flinched and moaned loudly. “No, no.” The rest was gibberish. I held her and wondered if I should wake her from the dream. I wasn’t one hundred percent sure if I was hearing right, until she repeated the same word again, her head thrashing back and forth.

Mayday.

I moved to wake her, but she stopped moaning and her breathing slowed. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully again, but on the back of my neck, my hairs stood up. Something very bad had happened to Cassie.
