Chapter Thirteen

“Are you sleeping with him?”

Eliza turned off the sink. She’d been splashing water on her face in one of the many guest bathrooms in her father’s house. His house. A giant house with too many rooms and not enough people inside. It always felt too empty to her.

Eliza grabbed a hand towel and glanced over at Kathleen. She didn’t really think of the other woman as her stepmother. She was just…Kathleen. The woman who’d appeared in her father’s life from seemingly nowhere. Her father had always enjoyed his lovers over the years. He’d sworn, though, that he wouldn’t remarry. Not after her mother’s death.

Then Kathleen had appeared.

Kathleen who often wore a smile that never reached her eyes. Kathleen who was often excruciatingly polite in public, but could cut a person dead in private. Kathleen who always seemed so watchful.

“Answer the question, Eliza,” Kathleen ordered.

She turned off the water. Took her time rearranging the hand towel. Then looked toward the other woman. “It’s rude to interrupt someone when the person is trying to have a moment of privacy.”

“The bathroom door wasn’t closed. You were just splashing water on yourself.” Her head tilted. “Were you trying to make it look as if you were crying?”

No, quite the opposite. She’d been trying to get rid of any tears. To push away the burn that wanted to fill her eyes. “Of course, not.”

“You can’t trust him.”

Sighing, she advanced on Kathleen. “Why does it matter to you?”

“Because I don’t want you hurt, obviously! I am your stepmother. I care about you.”

Okay. Her temples throbbed. “You’ve never been concerned about my personal relationships before.”

“That man stood in this house and admitted that his plan is to seduce you! To get you obsessed with him.”

“I don’t remember him using the word ‘obsessed,’” she murmured.

“And then he wants to take you away! It is so apparent that he thinks he can get his hands on your money, but if you run off with him, your father will—”

Eliza couldn’t help it. She laughed.

“Are you laughing at me?” Kathleen bit out.

Not at her. “I’m laughing because the idea of Memphis caring about my money is ridiculous. He doesn’t give a damn about any money that my family may have.”

“Oh, is that what he’s told you?”

“He has his own money.”

“Does he?”

This was an absurd conversation. “There are bigger things going on in my life than this.” She headed for the door.

Kathleen jumped in front of her. “He will dangle you in front of a killer. You do not matter to him. Hunting does. Bagging another monster. That’s all he cares about.”

Eliza’s head tilted. “I know he doesn’t care about me.” Why would she be surprised by that? “He has been very honest about his goals all along.”

She heard the groan of the wooden floor. The sound came from near the guest room’s entrance, but Eliza didn’t look that way. Not yet. “My goals are completely aligned with his. Memphis and I both want to bring the man who abducted me to justice.
