Wyatt

“Nothing’s going on,” I reply.

She looks like a human firecracker right now, with her hands gripping her hips and her eyes dark and intense. A pulse of heat shoots through me. Being near her like this is dangerous because fuck it, I’m done trying to play friends. I want her and trying to deny it is slowly killing me.

“Bullshit,” she says. “You race out of here an hour before the deadline for the biggest story of the year. We have to work together, not keep secrets from each other.”

Secrets.

I rub the back of my neck. She’s right. How am I going to keep mine safe without lying? “I’m sorry. I…had to meet with a source.”

“A source for what?”

I sigh. “It’s actually something you encouraged me to do, and…it’s working.”

She gives me a puzzled look.

“Someone inside CJ Parks’ operation agreed to talk to me. I need to protect him. He’s got a lot to lose.”

“Does he know who poisoned the lambs?” she asks.

I draw my lips tight. “He hasn’t come out and said it, but I think he will. He wants a guarantee that his family will be safe. Noah Tucker’s on standby, ready to pass his involvement up the chain.”

“That’s incredible, Wyatt!” she says. “Why didn’t you just tell me?”

Her genuine enthusiasm triggers a feeling of guilt. Why didn’t I just tell her? Am I afraid she’s going to try to steal this story from me? I wince. Fuck, that’s an ugly thought.

“There wasn’t time,” I say because it’s true. “Ike gave me the tip right before the news about the forensics from the University came in and I was afraid my source was going to bolt.” And I didn’t feel exactly safe, meeting him at a BLM campsite just north of town, tucked into the cottonwoods. But if he confesses to helping CJ plant those poisoned lambs, the risk is going to be worth it.

She watches me with admiration. “Wow, we’re following two huge stories right now. This is amazing, Wyatt!”

While I want to share her excitement, caution flags are flying in the back of my brain. I still have Hazel’s secret to protect, and if CJ finds out I’ve flipped his employee to rat on him, all hell could break loose.

“When do you think you’ll have intel?” she asks.

I shake my head. “Not sure. Could be a few days.”

“Okay, well, what’s our next move on the Rundell story? Do you want to split up the interviews?” Brooke asks. “I already talked with Pastor Fredrickson. I could follow up with the rest of the staff. We also need to look into his past. Maybe he made enemies.”

I steady myself with a deep breath. “Easy, there. We need to be cautious.”

“Well, sure,” she says slowly, “but that doesn’t mean we can’t ask questions.”

A painful prickle erupts on the back of my neck. “It’s just…this is a small town, and people might get upset if we hint at the idea of foul play.” While this is true, digging deep into this case might uncover things that would be better left buried.
