Chapter 8
Daniel closed his laptop as his younger brother stepped into his office. He smiled, glad to see Brodie back from vacation. âHey, how was the vacation? Catch any fish?â
Brodie raised his eyebrows. âAre youâ¦in a good mood?â he whispered the last part like an obnoxious jackass.
Rolling his eyes, he stood and rounded his desk. âCome on, how was the vacation?â
âAll right, who are you and what have you done with my brother?â Brodie grinned, his face more tanned than normal as he strode in wearing jeans and a T-shirt with a familiar surf brand on it. He looked a lot more relaxed than Daniel had seen him in a while. Normally he was in sharp suits and had a âdonât mess with meâ expression firmly in place.
âHa, ha.â He pulled Brodie into a tight hug.
âIâm just saying, itâs the first time in a while you havenât snarled at me.â
Daniel snorted. âYouâre full of it. And youâre in a good mood too.â
âSo?â
âSoâ¦what? You gonna tell me about your vacation or not?â He leaned against the edge of his desk as Brodie watched him expectantly.
âI caught a bunch of fish, caught up on reading, and didnât talk to almost anyone for two weeks. It was amazing.â
Daniel knew his brother had basically fallen off-grid, like he often did when he took a couple days away. But Brodie had been gone two weeks this time. Clearly it had been good for him. âGood for you.â
âNow itâs your turn. Whatâs going on with you? Youâre not the sad sack you were a couple weeks ago.â
âSheâs going out with me tonight,â he said simply. And he didnât need to specify who she was either. He could admit that he was nervous too, which was unfamiliar territory for him. But Kathryn had always made him feel like a horny teenager with no moves.
Brodieâs eyes widened slightly. âGood for you. Hope you guys get it right this time.â
Yeah, so did he. He pressed his intercom. âNicole, reschedule my four thirty and five oâclock. Sorry I didnât let you know earlier.â Heâd been consumed with working on contracts and had forgotten.
There was a short pause, then, âOf course, sir.â
He looked at his brother again. âWhat are you doing here anyway? Not that Iâm not happy to see you.â
âI was on my way home and thought Iâd see if you wanted to grab a couple beers, but I know the answer is no.â
He thought about trying to squeeze it in before meeting Kathryn, but there was no way. âWhy donât you call Sienna, see what sheâs up to?â He needed to check on his sister too. Sheâd been so damn cagey lately when he asked her what she was doing.
âAlready tried. She answered the phone, said she just wanted to make sure it wasnât an emergency, then hung up on me.â Brodie grinned slightly.
âSo Iâm the second choice? Thatâs cold, man.â He grabbed his laptop case off his desk and motioned that he was going to head out.
âMy plan was always to ask both of you.
