Thatcher was absolutely exhausted. After their kiss last night, he couldn’t think about anything else. All he did was toss and turn, dreaming about that kiss and what it was like to have her in his arms.

It had felt right in a way it had never felt with Kathleen. Then again, he’d thought what he had with Kathleen had felt right at the time, but he’d been proven wrong in the end.

He barely knew Lacey.

Why did he want to continue whatever this was developing between them? The only reason he could think of was the fact that Lacey actually listened to him. She didn’t think his plans were crazy like Kathleen had. She didn’t try to convince him to go back and take up his birthright.

It may also have been his loneliness that caused him to act the way he did. He’d been irrational, foolish and swept up in the moment.

She was easy to talk to, and it had felt right, so he’d kissed her. And then she pushed him away. She’d been hurt and vulnerable, and maybe he shouldn’t have done that.

He was worried he’d scared her off and hadn’t been one hundred percent sure that Lacey was going to show up today. So when she walked into the infirmary, he’d been so relieved.

He’d also been relieved that she wanted to continue their friendship, because that’s what he wanted too.

It was nice to have a friend again. He’d worked with many other nurses, but they’d never been interested in forming any kind of friendship, and that didn’t bother him in the least. Thatcher wasn’t sure what was so different about Lacey, but he wanted to continue to find out. He couldn’t stop thinking about her.

And he liked being with her.

For the first time in a long time, he was enjoying himself.

He was glad that they were able to work this out. He was glad there was no awkwardness after his faux pas last night. Not that he thought kissing her was a mistake. He just didn’t want to push her away.

The only problem was, the more he was spending time with her, the more he didn’t want just a friendship.

He wanted more from her, and he was doing everything in his power not to put his arm around her or hold her hand.

There was a moment in the bakery when he’d forgotten that she wanted to be just friends, and he’d come close to kissing that sugar off her nose. Her lips were sweet, and he wanted to taste them again.

It would have been an incredibly intimate gesture. He’d known he shouldn’t do it and had stopped himself just in time.

But he was drawn to her.

It would be hard to say goodbye to her when the cruise was over and they went their separate ways, because that was one thing he wasn’t sure about when it came to Lacey.

She didn’t know where she was going.

And he did.

He glanced over at her as she rested her chin on her hand, staring out the window as the train slowly climbed up to the White Pass.
