Chapter Seven

Corinne looked at the clock and then threw her hands into the air in triumph. She had just gotten her career-best score in calf roping. Even better, only Audrey had gotten a better score, which meant Corinne had come in second place. She was grinning from ear to ear as she rode from the arena to the stalls. She slid off her horse’s back and gave Princess a pat.

“Great job,” Remi said, running up with her other sisters and giving Corinne a big hug.

“Thanks.” She was still shaking with excitement.

“You’re having your best week,” Brynn said. “It’s like you’re a woman possessed.”

Corinne grinned. “I’m just feeling more committed to competition these days. I’m giving my all and then some.”

“Does your visit with Mike have anything to do with that new attitude?” Audrey asked, a sly smile on her face. “Those Burris men know how to get a woman motivated.”

Corinne thought briefly about Mike and how happy she’d been with him. That was, until he’d set her on the back burner while he went to observe a surgery. Rationally, she knew he’d done that because he wanted to get the most out of his education. It had been a good opportunity for him. But her emotional side felt like she’d come in second place. Unlike coming in behind Audrey, she wasn’t thrilled to have placed behind a medical procedure.

This type of circumstance was bound to arise again in the future. She wouldn’t like it then either. If it happened too often, eventually she would become resentful and bitter. Unfortunately, she didn’t think she and Mike could regain the magic they’d once had. She saw that now. They had too much to lose to try again. She liked Mike too much to start disliking him.

“My performance has nothing to do with Mike. I’ve just been practicing harder and focusing on improving my skills. I’m not an appendage of Mike Burris if that’s what you think.” Those last words came out harsher than Corinne had planned.

“Whoa,” Audrey said. “Calm down. I was just joking.”

Corinne blew out a breath. She hadn’t intended to snap at her sisters. “I know. I don’t know why I overreacted like that. I should be happy with my score. I am happy with my score.”

“You’re just unhappy with the way things ended with Mike,” Remi said gently.

“What went wrong?” Brynn asked. “You were so excited about going to see him.”

“Nothing went wrong.”

“Tell that to someone who didn’t have to let you into her hotel room at the crack of dawn,” Remi said. “Not that I minded. It’s just that you showed up earlier than expected.”

Corinne sighed. “The weekend started off so well. We went to a Caribbean restaurant, did some sightseeing and had a blast. I was so sure that we were going to make the relationship work.”

“And then?”

“And then one of his professors called and invited him to observe an operation he was doing. He was out of the apartment so fast you would think his feet were on fire.
