CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I’d never been so happy to be home and showered. After such a long night, I was ready to relax. I’d messaged Charlotte asking her if we could chat after lunch, and she agreed. I was nervous to talk to her, but I figured it was best to be honest about where my head was at and what I was looking for.

At one o’clock, my phone rang, and it was her. Closing my bedroom door, I answered.

“Hello?” My voice sounded hoarse to my ears, and I wondered if I had done any more singing last night. I cringed at the thought.

“Hey. How are you? Is it weird if I say I missed you yesterday?”

I closed my eyes and soaked in her words. It was nice to be missed, and I missed her, too. But some important things needed to be discussed, and the sooner I got them out, the better I would feel.

“Charlotte, I like you. But—”

“Oh. Wow. I didn’t expect that.”

Expect what? She cut me off before I could finish my thought. How did she know what I was going to say?

“Excuse me?” I was confused, but I’d give her a chance to explain what she meant.

“I thought we were hitting it off. Like on a different level, but I guess I was wrong. I do this all the time. Jump head-first into a relationship, only to find they aren’t as into it as I am. So, your next words are, ‘But we can still be friends.’?”

“You’ve been hurt before.” It wasn’t a question because I could tell. “I’m not looking to push you away—the opposite. I wanted to talk to you about what we are and what we expect.”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have interrupted you. What do you think we are? What do you want us to be?”

I wished she would’ve gone first, but that was okay. It needed to be said. “Well, if I’m honest, I’d like you to be my girlfriend. But if you say yes to that, I don’t want there to be other people on the side.” It was all on the table now, and it was her turn to decide if she wanted to be as all-in as me.

“Really?” She was quiet for a long minute, and it made me anxious, but then she continued. “I want that, too. But how will this work? Can you tell me where you live? Not your address, but at least the state? I’m okay with the long-distance thing, but I would like to know how hard it would be for us to meet… When we’re ready of course.” She threw that in, probably afraid I would run otherwise.

I shouldn’t be nervous about giving her information. I trusted her with a lot of other very personal things about myself, but I still had a bit of skepticism because online, you could be anyone. However, I could hear her, and I believed she was who she said she was. There was no reason to hold back anymore. If I wanted this, I had to risk it for the biscuit.
