This was going to be impossible.

Maggie stared out at the windswept field. Cornstalks bended over under the weight of the snow. Cattle huddled together. Miles of white ran all the way to the horizon.

On the interstate, semi-trailers barreled along. Traffic hadn’t slowed. But out here, the roads were deserted. Gusts of blowing snow caused whiteout conditions. It swirled all around the vehicle. Sometimes it felt like they were driving in a tunnel. Maggie couldn’t see, no matter which window she looked out. She wasn’t sure how Spencer knew he was on the road.

What was she thinking? That they’d drive around until they magically found the discarded cell phone? And somehow, Creed and Grace would be there with it?

Pakula was probably right when he said the phone could be on the ground and covered with drifts of snow. Creed could have dropped it without knowing after he talked to Hannah. According to Alonzo, the phone had gone dark after that call.

Now, if the phone glowed red or emitted an audible ping, it would be too difficult to see or hear it in these miles of white covered landscape.

Except that Alonzo had intercepted activity at five-thirty this morning. A lost phone didn’t send a signal without being powered back on. And then miraculously go dark again.

“We’re about a mile away,” Pakula told Spencer. He was watching a GPS device that he’d placed on the dashboard of the pickup. Supposedly, it was more sophisticated and accurate than the vehicle’s built-in device.

Maggie watched the pops of color crawl on the screen and intersect different colored lines. She was too wired to focus on it. She’d leave it to Pakula. Instead, her eyes stayed on the ditches and fields, searching for anything that didn’t belong.

“It wasn’t snowing hard at five-thirty,” Pakula said. “Did Agent Alonzo say the activity that registered would need to be user initiated?”

“Yes,” Maggie answered without taking her eyes off the landscape. “Sheriff, can you slow down?”

Spencer tapped the brake so hard the motion jerked all of them forward. The tires slid a bit before gaining traction.

“Sorry,” he mumbled.

She hadn’t seen a single shed or building that wasn’t a part of a farm. Only fields and pastures. Even the cattle had nowhere to go.

When did her heart start pounding in her ears? Her palms were sweaty, and a knot began forming in the pit of her stomach.

Last March she had gotten caught in a restaurant when a tornado hit. She and others were trapped in the basement for hours while debris rained down, threatening to bury them alive. All the while, storms continued to rage above. But during that time, she didn’t feel as helpless as she did right now. There was always one more thing to try. She knew then that she needed to just hang on until someone came to the rescue.

Now here she was: the rescuer. She felt more powerless than when she was in that basement. The only thing similar was the panic gnawing at her. A time bomb clicked in her head with the rhythm of her heart.
