Betley

Day Two

Betley glanced over his shoulder at the three civilians who’d invaded his space. The last thing he wanted was to have four other people to be responsible for. He hadn’t prepared for guests.

Ever since joining the task force investigating the Chinese government's theft of corporate and medical research and the overlapping investigation of an increased number of Chinese nationals illegally crossing the US border with Mexico, Betley had known something big was coming. Even though he wasn’t read in on the details, which were being kept strictly need-to-know, he’d done some digging, called in a few favors, and put two-and-two together.

When he confided in his partner and shared what he’d surmised, Rodriguez had told him he sounded like one of those prepper conspiracy nuts. Betley scanned the shelves of boxes containing a year's worth of food and supplies. Who’s the nut now?

“You said you would get me out of this city. Your government would give me a new identity. All I had to do was report Shan Huang’s movements and bring you documents of his business meeting with Hui Shi,” Kim said.

Betley leaned across the table. “I told you to stay put and not attract attention. They were likely just being paranoid as the last details of the plan fell into place.”

“You have contacts. You can call and get us out, right?”

“No, Kim. Your freaking government just sent us all back to the stone age. Even if there are any working means of transportation, they aren’t going to waste them on an FBI agent and his Chinese informant.”

Betley didn’t believe Kim had anything to do with the Communist Party’s attack on the United States. He’d been working with her for over a year. She was desperate to get out from under the party’s control. Everything she’d brought him so far had been credible and verified. But those in the bureau who didn’t know her like he did wouldn’t care. She’d just as likely end up in some sort of camp, much like the country had set up for the Japanese during World War II.

“I told you. I was being followed. They know something. They were chasing me. They caused me to crash my car into that lady.” Kim pointed to the cute brunette.

“Don’t you get it? None of that matters now. The CCP succeeded in launching an EMP. I can’t know for sure, but it likely covers most of the United States. They aren’t going to be able to track you now.”

Betley was only guessing. No one could say for sure what electronic equipment would be affected. But from all indications, since the phones were all out, it was likely any global positioning satellite tracking would be inoperable as well.

“What are we going to do now?” Kim asked.

Betley didn’t have a clue what to tell her. The bulk of his plan had been to ride out the initial days of the event right there in his storage unit and then head to the coast after everything calmed down. He had a boat there.
