CHAPTER 10 - DONNA

It had been a good session, all things considered.

Donna and Roz had both wondered whether the interruption of Travis’s soldiers would throw some of their patients off their recovery and that they’d have to start fielding questions about the right way to disembowel an enemy. Of course, in Donna’s experience, she’d done enough killing for a lifetime. After the incident with Sarah Lee, Donna hoped that she would never have to kill ever again.

Most of the patients had already left for the day. One had remained behind - the retired soldier named Jonas. He was overwhelmed with what could best be described as restlessness. “I spent my whole adult life fighting in wars. I feel like I should be the one fighting right now.”

Donna didn’t know how to respond to that. She’d heard cases of soldiers who had lived through so much horror, they’d found it nigh impossible to settle back into everyday life, and had felt bereft of purpose unless they were on a battlefield. She wanted to make suggestions to Jonas, things he could do, “Is there anything else you feel you can offer the world?” Donna asked, daring herself to sound optimistic.

“No,” said Jonas, shaking his head sadly. “I never expected to make it. I had people on my team who got blown to pieces disarming a bomb and lost their limbs to some scumbag. As for me, I always made it out intact, barely a scratch. It makes you wonder, why me? Especially now. So many others were more deserving of a peaceful life. They aren’t here anymore. I always imagined I’d go down fighting. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. That kind of thing. I wake up every day and I just feel like a blank slate, wondering why I’m still here. I need to believe that it’s for a reason. I need to believe that there is some higher power keeping me alive over more deserving people.”

This pain resonated with Donna a little too well. She remembered the times when she had considered ending it all, when life had been at its bleakest, and she had to scramble to find purpose, some reason to keep fighting.

“Deserve's got nothing to do with it,” she finally said. “There are so many people who die yet deserve to live and there are people who probably deserve to die but they’re still here, full of life. That’s not God. That’s just a random roll of the dice. Life is what we make it. I know that doesn’t mean much to you now but give it time. Everyone in this room feels some sense of loss. We all feel like we’ve got that black hole in our chest that we have no idea how to fill. You’re among people who understand you, Jonas. I promise you. This pain you’re feeling right now? It’s not forever. It feels like it, but as someone who has been down that hole, trust me, you’ll see that light at the end of the tunnel.
