Chapter Fourteen

Ashley Davis

I couldn’t understand any part of what had just happened. My mind was racing as I went upstairs to get my swimsuit so we would come down and swim together.

He’d come up and gotten his swimsuit and went down again without saying anything. Just getting it and then holding it and smiling at me as he went down to wait.

I tried to tell myself that it was all a game to him. It was all part of being man and wife on the island to him and he didn’t really care. Even as I told myself that, though, I took my swimsuit and changed, looking at myself in the mirror. My free hair was still flowing in the wind even now, and it made me think back to that younger woman, that me who made strange decisions, passionate and irrational.

What if Davin is helping let a younger me out? That was my last thought as I got into my swimsuit and walked downstairs and out the screen door in the back to meet him. I placed a blanket by the side of the pool.

“You were taking so long that I thought you’d maybe forgotten how to put on your bathing suit.”

I grinned, pushing away all the thoughts about his reasons away. I really didn’t need anything but happiness. The island called at you to be happy, and it was easier to oblige… and sweeter, too. Why worry needlessly when you could just be happy, right?

I dipped my feet into the pool and found out that it was pleasantly cool, so I got in, resting close to the steps at the shallow end.

He raised his eyebrows. “Can’t swim?”

“I can,” I replied. “Just settling in.”

He grinned, moving about in the water, diving in deep and coming out again. He moved through the water easily, like it was nothing at all and I sat and watched, allowing the soft waves he caused to allow me to drift.

He surfaced again and I raised my container of sunscreen to him.

“This needs applying if you don’t want us to look weird at the welcome party tonight,” I told him.

He swam over to me and took the sunscreen from me while I turned around to allow him to apply it. I took my hair out of the way and unpinned my bikini top. All of me felt hot already. He took out the sunscreen and began to lather it slowly on my back. His touch brought a soft gasp from me as his hands caressed my back slowly, moving around and down my spine. I could barely breathe now.

It had been a long time since… almost since Henry, and the few bad cameos.

Davin’s hands moved slowly now, and I could feel his breath on my neck. A soft moan pushed out of me again. My nipples hardened, and their ridges pricked against the fabric of the bikini.

“Are you sure about this, Ash? It’s been a while,” he muttered in my ear.

“For me, too,” I replied breathlessly.
