God’s Provision

The Newcastle campaign of 1992 was pivotal for us in several ways. One evening in a meeting there I spoke about a deep desire of my heart: I longed to be able to visit Scotland and preach the gospel. It was my parents’ homeland and the place where I had done my agricultural training, and I felt a burden for the Scottish people.

Although I didn’t know it, a young Scottish missionary was in the audience. She wrote a letter to her family in the south-west of Scotland, telling them about our evangelistic work and the Farmers for Jesus campaign, and they were fired by the vision that I could speak to the farmers of Scotland. When I got home I found an air letter waiting for me. A young man called Sandy Jamieson would arrange a preaching itinerary for me across Scotland, if I could make my way there.

It was an answer to prayer and an exciting prospect, but how could such a trip be financed? I was sure that God was in these plans, and I knew I could trust him to provide a way. The answer came swiftly and simply. A young Christian couple visited the farm, and as they were leaving they handed me an envelope.

“This is for your trip to Britain,” they said. I thanked them, thinking it was a card wishing me a safe trip. When I opened it later on, my heart nearly stopped. Inside was a cheque for R10,000, more than enough for my air fare to Scotland.

However, there was still one other problem: the tour Sandy had organised for me would take nine weeks – too long for me to be away from the farm.

That year we had enjoyed two exceptional harvests: of souls won for Jesus in the Newcastle campaign, and of mealies on the farm. Now I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that the Lord had called me into full-time ministry, and that it would require my total commitment. Jill and I were facing one of the hardest tests we had known: we were placing on the altar everything we loved and had worked so hard for. We surrendered everything to God.

“Lord, we are in your hands. Shalom belongs to you.” It was the base for our ministry and the source of our finance.

Invitations for evangelism were becoming more and more frequent, and they involved a lot more work than I had realised at first. We needed to visit the local churches, book venues, organise accommodation for team members, take care of advertising and prepare the talks and sermons for the meetings. We were finding it increasingly impossible to meet the demands of the farm at the same time. At home we were running a herd of beef cattle, growing our crops of seed maize and caring for the pine plantation. I was struggling to balance my two callings, and I couldn’t be in two places at once.

“How can I leave the farm? Who will take care of it? Please send someone, Lord.
