Part Five
An hour later, there had been little further deliberation of what was to be done now. They collectively tried to decide how anyone was to seize the upper hand over a necromancer, but when no mutual decisions could be made, what with Wyatt and Colby bickering in a way they usually never did, Peregrine simply sitting there in an unhappy silence, and Jan applying every one of their ideas to a fairytale setting, Atherton finally told his friends to go back to their part of camp and fill Tedrey and Florin in on what they’d discussed.
He lingered in Jayden’s tent as the others left. They’d treaded in those deep waters Atherton had tried to avoid, but they certainly hadn’t reached the bottom. And they both knew it.
“Would you care for some brandy?” Jayden walked over to the more cluttered side of his tent and pulled a crystal wine glass from a makeshift shelf along with a canteen.
“Are you not having any?” Atherton couldn’t help but notice Jayden grab only one glass.
Jayden smiled forlornly. “I can’t drink much alcohol anymore. It messes with my magic and sets everything off kilter. I learned that the hard way four years ago.”
“It didn’t used to bother you.” Atherton frowned, even as he took a long sip of the no doubt costly liquor.
“Not to sound pretentious, Atherton, but my magic has intensified over the years, and something about it can’t handle the effects of alcohol.”
“Interesting.” What other qualities of Jayden’s had changed over the years, and had his likes and dislikes evolved as well? Did Jayden still have a secret proclivity for melon gardens? Did he still abhor flower patterns on any surface?
He glanced around the tent to distract himself from such morose thoughts as he sipped his brandy. He couldn’t comprehend the purpose of the fortune sitting in this tent alone. It was a thief’s dream come true. Okay, that wasn’t a good thought to be having either. Atherton’s mind was a field of the things he’d picked up over the years. A criminal’s mind.
“What are you thinking about?” Jayden suddenly asked.
Atherton turned red. What would Jayden do, he wondered, if Atherton said that he was the so-called ‘hooded leader’ of the band of thieves which was running around the country stealing from the rich? What would he do if he knew Atherton had used Jayden’s sword magic to help his troupe steal?
“Uh, nothing. Just thinking about old times.”
Jayden was moving closer all of a sudden. “I’ve been thinking too.” And now he had this earnest expression on his face, like maybe he was going to—
Someone barreled through the tent flap and knocked into the table opposite where Atherton and Jayden were sitting. A couple of persons, actually. Damn, but was interruption going to be a recurring theme of this adventure? For the first time in years, Atherton longed for a warm bedroom with a deadbolt lock.
Except, it was Wyatt and Colby. They were practically tripping over themselves and panting, much like Reuben had hours before.
