CHAPTER FOURTEEN
THEY MOVED OUTSIDE to the balcony where Jada was first introduced to the games. It had only been a few months ago, but it felt like a lifetime since then. The day was a pleasant one despite the unexpressed rage inside of her. The fairies gathered on the dais overlooking the board like the very model of fairy propriety and decorum. They looked like old friends having brunch. Not depraved murderous savages that stole people from their lives and forced them to fight to the death for their power and general amusement.
Jada lifted her skirt and made her way down the marbled stairs. Odin silently followed her down to the board, where three concentric circles were laid out. Two humans stood there waiting for her to come down. One was a fair brown, tall, and thin with a large curly black afro. Musicals notes were inked along the muscles of his arms and chest. She could see the beginning of a treble clef peeking out beneath the collar of the white button up he wore rolled up to his elbows. The other was a medium brown beauty who had her small purple ringlets pulled into a tall Mohawk. The way they stood next to each other spoke of a deeper relationship than just friendship. The woman looked worried, but the male seemed to be serene.
They turned towards Jada as she walked over with Odin, and the male took a step forward and offered his hand. âHowdy, Iâm Princeton. I will be your opponent today. Nice to harm you! This luscious lovely over here is Valkari.â
âPrince!â Valkariâs soft alto was scandalized but amused. The relationship was definitely not one of just being friends. It was refreshing to see genuine love in such a desolate place.
Jadaâs lips quirked, and she looked back at Odin, who nodded at Princeton and then Valkari. Jada shook her head in exasperation at the tall man and returned the handshake. âIâm Jada; this tall drink of surly water is Odin. I am both pleased and sad to be meeting you both under these circumstances.â
Princeton raised Jadaâs hands to his lips in a chaste kiss before letting it drop gently to her side. âWell, if Iâm going to get murdered, Iâm glad itâs by someone as beautiful as you.â
Valkari rolled her eyes in exasperation, but Jada could see the deep fear that she had for Princeton. She took a deep breath and gave Jada a long once over. âNot to be rude, but aren't you a little over dressed for a duel?â
Jada laughs with a shake of her head. âThis was not planned, I assure you.â
âEnough of this! Fight already!â Silvestriâs voices rang out over the board, and all four of them collectively frowned up at the dais where she sat.
Trine arrives on the field with a backflip that forces Jada and Princeton to step back from each other about three feet. The grotesque sneer on his face made Jada want to get violent. âThe rules are as follows.
