CHAPTER ELEVEN

Boots perked a moment before raised voices filtered through the kitchen door, interrupting my attempted moment of fuzzy zen. He growled low, the vibration rumbling like the motor of my beat-up car when it struggled to turn over in winter.

“What now?” I muttered, getting to my feet.

Well, paws.

Boots led the way and was large enough to easily shoulder his way through the door. He was considerate enough to wait for me to scramble through before he moved on and let it swing shut again. He clearly understood the consequences of getting one’s tail pinched.

Persia stood at the top of the staircase, wrapped in a robe printed with sunflowers, her wings beating furiously enough to send droplets of water flying from her soaked tresses. “—had just about enough! If we’re to be held hostage here, the least you could do would be to make it a pleasant experience!” She snarled, her ire directed at Holly who stood between Brandon and Nyra at the bottom of the stairs.

From somewhere beyond, the chorus of Singin’ in the Rain played. It sounded theatrical and raw.

“What seems to be the matter?” Holly asked, her tone as pinched as her expression.

“The shower is possessed!” Persia exclaimed. She stepped to the side and swept an arm in dramatic fashion. “See for yourself if you don’t believe me! All I know is I want out of this haunted house.” She flicked daggers at Brandon and Nyra. “I’ve already packed my bags. If you don’t let us go, I’ll call your bosses and have you both dismissed!”

“Go ahead and call,” Nyra said with a casual shrug, though the intensity in her dark eyes plainly showed her true feelings on the matter. “But I have to say, fleeing the scene of a crime against the leader of your guild might look a little suspicious.”

Holly didn’t wait for the fairy to decide what she wanted to do. I followed Boots, who followed Harmony, who followed Holly, and we raced upstairs to the third floor just as Esmerelda, Rita, and Lila charged for the stairs, their hands over their ears.

“What is that racket?” Esmerelda asked.

Holly moved past them and the four of us burst into the steam-filled guest bathroom and were met with a sight that would have been hilarious under different circumstances: The showerhead had sprouted a cartoonish face and was singing show tunes as it merrily spritzed water around the glass enclosure.

“What in the Otherworld?” Holly yelped.

Huge, blue eyes glanced over at us and the singing temporarily paused. “Towels on the right,” the voice said. “I’ve still got some hot water in the tank!”

“Someone tell me there is a Motel 6 nearby,” I said, blinking rapidly. “I am not cut out for this.”

“What do we do?” Harmony asked, nervously shifting a look toward Holly.

“I—I have no idea.” Holly lunged forward and turned the dial. The water shut off, but the singing only grew louder as the cursed (and tone deaf) showerhead launched into a new ditty. “OOOOk-lahoma, where the—”

“Someone please make it stop!” Harmony said, her hands over her ears.
