Oh, Fabio
I asked Mimi to take Black home first, but Black refused, said she wanted to be a part of this to the end, so reluctantly I agreed. But told her she'd have to wait with the others while Aunty and I went to sort a few things out.
There were many questions from everyone, and Aunty most of all, but I merely told them that this was for Aunty and I to do alone and all would be revealed when we returned. Nobody was happy, everyone gave me grief about us being a team now, and they were right, but I stood my ground; this was the right thing to do so I begged them in my nicest voice to please trust me.
Eventually Mimi agreed to drive back to Freaky Finders headquarters and we all filed off the bus. After a quick cup of tea, as drinks anywhere but home are never as nice, Aunty and I washed up, brushed our teeth, changed clothes then were back out the door and settling into the Freakmobile. Ah, so nice to be back in my car after the bus abomination.
Aunty looked at me quizzically but I just winked and fired up the engine before heading off.
"I know where we're going," noted Aunty as we got closer. "Why are we returning? Not that I object, mind you."
"Remember I said you wouldn't like what I thought was going on? This is why." I took the turn then moments later we were back at the rundown fair with all the decrepit rides and the weeds pushing through cracked concrete.
"You don't think he is up to something?"
"I do. I think he knows exactly what is going on and I wouldn't be surprised if he's done all of this on purpose from the get-go. Guess we'll find out. Come on."
Fabio was hiding things from us, lots of things. No way was he as innocent as he was making out. The faery was about to tell me the golem had returned here, I was certain of it, but there was only one way to find out for sure. If I was wrong, then hell, I was wrong, but I didn't think so.
We wandered over to Fabio's home, my senses on high alert, Aunty silent. Outside the door I turned to her, "Look, I know you like him, and he is certainly a charmer, but the faery said Drake was returning to the one who⦠My guess is he was going to pay Fabio a visit. Maybe I'm totally wrong, I hope so for his sake, and yours, because you deserve a nice guy in your life, apart from me of course, but something tells me thatâ"
"My dear lady, such a pleasure to see you again," crooned Fabio as he opened the door. He glared at me and said, "Spencer," with a nod.
"Fabio. Mind if we come in?"
"Well, this is rather unexpected, again. I was on my way out, business to attend to. Can this wait until another time?"
