Chapter Twenty

Daisy

“If he’s such a terrible man, does Erin really want to go back to him? She seemed very happy with Lord Wolfsbane,” Larkin said.

“Too happy,” Cyrus said. “She certainly does not want to marry Christopher Sutton. In fact, she’s terrified of him and very relieved that she escaped to our lands.”

“Ha! I knew it,” I said. “Erin made such a fuss about wanting to go home. All the time. I’m one hundred percent sure that she’s the one who got the rules changed so I would miss the contest. But he certainly does want her.”

“Daisy girl, have you considered the possibility that it may be he plans to skin her and sell her pelt?” Orson asked.

“Obviously. I’ve seen enough horror movies to go there first.”

“So…is that what we’re going with, then?” Orson asked.

I furrowed my brows at him. “Are you okay with that?”

“I’m sure we can think of a better plan,” he said, but I got the feeling he would let Erin die if we didn’t think of a better plan.

“You’re scary, Orson. I usually can’t believe you were really an assassin, but…”

“Let it be known, I don’t want to sacrifice a girl,” he said. “But it’s better to just do what needs to be done.”

“You’re hot when you’re scary,” I said. “Let it be known. Anyway, Erin did keep demanding to go home and blaming me for tricking her into going to Wyrd, so it wouldn’t hurt to teach her a lesson either! I say we trade her for the spell, but then we give her something that will yank her back into Wyrd. There must be a way to do that, right? Cyrus?”

“I’m sure there is a way,” he said. “But it’s a different class of spell than I usually do. You just want a spell that will allow us to call Erin into Wyrd without her knowing?”

“Yeah. I don’t mind if she squirms a little, but I don’t want her to get killed. Or whatever. He might just get off on marrying a werewolf after he’s traded so many of their skins. But, to be clear, I don’t want him to have any chance to do anything to her. I’m not that horrible.”

“Daisy, I think we should tell her about the spell,” Larkin said. “That way she can activate it herself. If we give her, say, an enchanted necklace but we don’t tell her it’s a spell for her own safety, she might remove it.”

I made a face.

Cyrus said, “We don’t have to tell her immediately. She does deserve to be a little shaken. She has been unrelentingly cruel to Daisy and Lord Wolfsbane is no friend of mine.”

“Thank you,” I said. “A little revenge never hurt anyone!”

Larkin was about to argue that but Cyrus moved the conversation onward. “And we also need to find out how to extract the spell from Larkin’s eye. We have fifteen days to do it. Maybe less if the baby comes early.”

“But Morgana is ailing by the day,” Larkin said.
