CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

EARLY THE NEXT morning, Zoe accompanied Mistral, Umber and Cirrus back to the fair. She was surprised when they came upon the path to Moonlight. The kelpie’s ride had taken her further thsn she thought. Crossing into the fair from a side Zoe hadn’t travelled before, the scents and sounds of the traders opening up for the morning enticed her deeper into the maze of stalls.

She led the others towards her favourite pastry stall, but they weren’t yet open for business.

“Adelina!” A voice cut through the clatter of traders setting up. “There you are.” Florian raced towards her, accompanied by Wrol and two other guards. He ran a hand over his face. “I rushed out when Wrol brought the news. We’ve been searching ever since. I couldn’t stand to leave you outside the mound during the dark.” He pulled her close. “I’m glad to see you safe from harm.”

Zoe grinned, glad to be back in his arms again. “I was on my way to find Wrol.” She waited for Florian’s grip to loosen and turned to her guard. “It might be later than expected, but I returned to the Fair as soon as I could safely do so.”

Wrol nodded to her as the binding between them loosened. “I didn’t expect that horse to be so much trouble.” He grumbled.

Florian touched a scratch on her cheek.

His face hardened. He swung to face the fae she was with. “What have you done to her? Do you know the penalty for abducting a princess? She may not yet be my queen, but you will feel the weight of Sunlight’s displeasure.”

Mistral cowered behind his guardian’s legs.

Zoe stepped between the woodland fae and Florian, squeezing his arm. “You really should find out what happened before threatening anyone. If it wasn’t for them, I would have been out in the forest alone overnight.”

Florian took a deep breath. “If that’s true, you have my gratitude.”

She turned to face her guides. “You’ve brought me to the fair, as we agreed. There are no debts between us. OK?” She held out her hand for them to shake.

Umber and Cirrus did so, though keeping a wary eye on Florian.

Mistral glanced worried at her from behind the other two.

Zoe crouched down to face him. “How about we find something to eat together before we part ways? We left early, after all.”

Mistral brightened. “Flower cakes. Can we get flower cakes?” He bounced on his toes as he tugged Umber’s sleeve. “You never let us have them. Just this once. Please? To celebrate?”

His guardian ruffled his hair. “Now we no longer have to worry about water. We can stretch to flower cakes.”

“Worry about water?” Florian asked. “What do you mean?”

Zoe looped her arm into his. “I’ll explain it all once we’ve got cake. I don’t think I’ve tried the flower cakes. Are they good, Mistral?”

Mistral grabbed her free hand, tugging her along. “They’re the best thing I’ve ever eaten.”

Once they all had a flower cake, the woodland fae left them with well
