Mira stared at the pillar candles that had melted down to half their size. The soft playlist she had going in the background had reached its last song. Now, the dining room was silent. So silent Mira could hear the palpitating of her heart.
Two weeks had passed since she cut herself, and that was also the last argument she and Chris had. She apologized the next day for a couple of reasons. The pills sheâd gotten from the hospital werenât as strong as the ones he had, so she wanted them to be on good terms, and she also started to believe he genuinely cared for her.
Mira didnât like the fact that he, at one point, used pills to keep her in his life, but now that he was refusing to give them to her, she could definitely sense the change in his feelings for her. He was becoming more selfless in the way that he handled her⦠caring more about her health and well-being than satisfying her craving for the pills. It was easier to handle believing he didnât care for her much while he used the pills to keep her⦠but it was a whole other level of feelings coming to grips with the fact that a man genuinely cared.
That was foreign to her.
Even the men sheâd been with in the past always put themselves and their needs before hers⦠thatâs why she never cared when she used them.
But Chris⦠Chris was starting to make her believe he was differentâand that scared the hell out of her.
Was he being sincere? Or was this another act of control?
Did he really care about her well-being? Or did he just want her to stop buying from his competitors permanently?
It was truly hard to say. Just when Mira would begin to give Chris the benefit of the doubt, heâd do something to make her question his motives. Tonight, sheâd put together a romantic evening for him, and, as always, he was late. It was almost as if he only wanted to strengthen their friendship and have sex, because every time it was time for them to be romantic or intimate outside of sex, their plans wouldnât be executed properly.
With a huff, Mira stabbed her steak in the center with her knife and stood from the table, chair falling to the floor in the process. If there was one thing she couldnât stand⦠it was when her effort was unappreciated, unnoticed, or taken for granted. Mira could have easily spent the evening with friends or another man, but sheâd specifically set this time aside for him.
The sound of her phone ringing from the Bluetooth speaker pulled her out of her trance. Her eyes shifted from the food on the table to her phone on the fireplace. In no rush to answer, Mira slowly made her way over to grab it. At the sight of Diamondâs name, Mira was tempted to let her second call go to voicemail. With Diamond, there was no telling what she was about to say.
