A view of the exterior of the 19th-century railway carriage on The Ridge in East Sussex, which has been converted into a family home. Its owners, the Rankin family, have not just lovingly restored the carriage but have built around it to create a stunning five-bedroom house. Each cabin in the carriage has direct access from the old train doors onto this tranquil porch area, which the family have filled with vintage garden furniture. The family often gather here in the mornings for lazy breakfasts and in the evening for tea and drinks. Though it is just a few minutes’ walk from the carriage to beach, this area feels secluded and private. It is protected from the weather – be that sunshine or rain – by the galvanized roof overhead. From the upstairs balcony, there are breathtaking views of the beach and the sea.
