“Any more thoughts on the beach?” Liam asks.

“Can I give you an answer in the morning?” I say as I shift closer to him, our legs touching as they dangle off the dock. Before Liam can answer, I look over my shoulder. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I keep getting the strangest sense that I’m being watched. Maybe the incident with the Storm players spooked me more than I want to admit.

“What’s up?”

I look back at Liam. “I just want to make sure Mom and Dad don’t need me in the afternoon.” I don’t usually work Saturday, it’s a time for my schoolwork mostly, although I promised to open tomorrow. If they don’t get back early, I’ll be stuck working all day. I don’t miss the way his body physically tightens. He doesn’t get it. He doesn’t have pressures on him like I do. Okay, maybe that’s not a fair statement. He has pressures on him, they’re just different from mine.

“No, I mean, what’s up back there?” He turns around and searches the dock. “Is there someone there?”

“No, I think I’m just getting paranoid or something,” I explain trying to make light of it.

He lightly touches my face, brushing my blowing hair back. “I’m here.”

My knight in shining armor. I don’t believe in fairy tale endings, as he won’t always be here. His future is in Miami. His finger lingers around my ear, and dammit, my entire body is telling me to do another one-eighty and forget about the reasons we can’t be together. Cripes, it was just this morning, after sleeping with him all night, that I said we were over and now here I am wanting to crawl into bed with him again. I’m giving myself whiplash.

“When will you know tomorrow, about the beach?”

“Around noon,” I answer as he reaches into the pocket of his hoodie.

He pulls his hand out and stares at his empty palm. “Damn.”

“What?”

“Searching for beef jerky.” He chuckles. “Habit.”

“I’m never getting you off those things, am I?”

He laughs and throws his arm around me. He drags me close and I breathe in the scent of him. “Listen, the protein bars were delicious. There’s just something about meat sticks a guy needs.” A rumble of laughter fills the air.

“What?”

“I’m glad the guys on the team don’t know my love for jerky. Can you imagine the nickname they’d give me?”

“Meat stick, it might be appropriate,” I tease.

“Tanner, my bud on the team, they call him Banger.”

I shake my head, pretty sure I know where that comes from. “You guys have the weirdest nicknames for each other. Hey what’s yours?”

He groans. “You don’t want to know.”

“Now I definitely want to know more.”

“Fine, Hooker.”

I eye him. “Is that because…”

“Because fishermen hook fish, not for any other reason you might be thinking.”

“Whatever you need to tell yourself to sleep at night, Dunn,” I joke. Really though, I know a lot of the puck bunnies go after the players, and I’ve seen firsthand how they piled on him at the pub.
