Next morning I woke up early and walked along the lake and listened to the silence and noise of the landscape. Echoes of a waterfall. Ribbon-like clouds, twisted and involuntarily caught in the gaps between mountains and roofs of cottages, looked strangely beautiful. I returned to the conference for a buffet breakfast with a Bulgarian geology professor. The main event of the day was a brief moment when I sighted Annabel at a distance. She smiled. I walked up to her; we talked about the Burgess Shale hiking trail closure everyone was talking about. The park warden wanted to reduce contact between humans and wildlife for a week. Other than that I wrote a few impressions in my notebook. My head kept aching mildly. I did not feel like sitting through presentations or networking. Before driving back I took a tablet and coffee and wandered through the jungle of conference posters on display. Graduate student posters, some of them overtly ambitious, on known and unknown topics. How much Anthropocene? When did it begin? Technofossils. Cloud brightening. Detecting undetectable CO2. Disappearing Tuvalu. Ocean fertilization. Habitat loss after the Great Acceleration. Planeticide. The End of Nature. Is James Hansen’s Venus Syndrome speculation reasonable? Is the Anthropocene a retooling of Imperial Geology? Do we come from Hallucigenia or Pikaia? Contingency in Earth’s history. Geo-bio-ethics. Nine geological commandments for sapiens in order to return to Holocene.
