A Little Wedge Goes a Long Way

Do you own a platform shoe? You can thank French shoe designer Roger Vivier. He invented the modern platform in the 1930s. Of course, women had worn a form of platform shoes before that. That was back in the late 1500s when they had to keep their feet out of wet mud and garbage on the street.

The platform shoe had a wedge heel. This was a thick chunky heel. It also had a wedge sole. The whole foot was raised up several inches off the ground.

There were many different styles of turbans in the 1940s. Many of them were quite fancy, such as these turbans from a Sears catalog. They had bows, intricate knots, flowers, decorative pins, bustles, and veils.
