CHOOSE YOUR COMPANY WISELY
Heads up, people. Your public image is not only about the shoes you wear or the ride you roll in. It’s also defined by the crew you hang with, the way you behave, and the manner in which you treat other people. Don’t be complacent, hanging out with a sketchy crowd that harms your reputation! Don’t show up to a party in a crappy mood and turn people away from you with your bad attitude! (I love what a makeup artist once said to me: “I only go out when I’m in a fabulous mood, so everyone thinks I’m the happiest person around.” If he’s not got good vibes to offer, he stays in for the night.) The point is you’ve got to take a minute to reflect on how your public behavior adds to or hurts your image because you will get judged on those things whether you realize it or not, no matter if you’re a woman who’s in the spotlight or a student just starting out. Let your default setting be “gracious” if you can—no matter what your true mood might be underneath. And choose your company wisely: Friends and associates can reflect well on you or quickly tarnish your image.
