One week after the conversation with the MO at the Barracks in Shoeburyness, Max arrived back at Voormezeele, recovered and fairly well rested, and the first person he saw was Jonathan Heston, who took his bag from him and walked with him to the Squadron Office, where Miles Prince warmly welcomed him back. He told him the CO was out, what there was of his Flight was on an OP and it was due back shortly.

Max and Jonathan walked to their quarters over the short grass, feeling the autumnal chill which was now very evident, and although Jonathan handed Max a cigarette, nothing was said until his room was reached. Being a Flight -Commander, he had one of his own.

Jonathan sat on the edge of the bed. “I had a letter from Anna the other day, telling me she had bumped into you in London.”

Max paused in his unpacking. “Yes, that’s right. Saw her in Piccadilly. She was on the arm of some pratt in the Hussars.”

“Clark-Winstanley.”

“Yes, that’s the one. Know him?”

“Yeah.” Jonathan drawled the word whilst he lit another cigarette and blew a plume of smoke to the ceiling. “Family is loaded and he has an uncle high enough up on the General Staff to make sure he has a nice safe little billet, a Commission in a fashionable Regiment, but he will never have to go anywhere near where the nasty bullets fly!”

“I think that Anna wants to get rid of him. Probably why she damn near proposed to me after dinner that night.” He looked at his friend.

Heston looked grim. “Yes, Anna described it in more or less the same way. I knew it would be of no use because Maria will always be there, won’t she?”

“I’m sorry Jonathan, but I cannot help the way I feel. I love Maria, although I can never marry her now and probably not ever, especially if I am able to kill her brothers!”

“She’ll forgive you in the end, mark my words. In any case, the war might end before you can get them, have you thought of that?”

“Everyone keeps telling me the same thing. I will just have to make sure I get them before that time comes!”

“What concerns me, Max old boy, is that Anna will go and marry some idiot like Clark-Winstanley on the rebound.”

“She’s far too level headed for that, surely?”

“Who knows what goes through a woman’s brain? I cannot figure her out myself sometimes! Let’s go and eat.”

There was the noise of aero engines outside and they both moved to the window to see three aircraft of ‘A’ Flight appear overhead and bank to make their landing approach. Teddy Fisher was in the lead and landed cleanly, without the suspicion of a bounce, whereas the others settled down clumsily, with little confidence in what they were doing. Max turned to Jonathan and raised a questioning eyebrow.

“Replacements. Winters got the chop three days ago. A Tripehound got him over the lines. Teddy took those two up on an OP to see what they were like before you got back.
