F is for Farewell

A Sexy Send-off

Laura glanced around the room and an immense sense of happiness washed over her. Her farewell party was a small affair, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Her mother thought she was crazy, leaving it all behind. Her father thought she was brave, venturing into the unknown.

Six months ago, she’d applied for a position working as a nanny in Canada. And now here she was, the sum of what she owned packed into two suitcases, ready to go.

“We’re off, honey.” Her mother’s voice wrapped around her like a comfort blanket. A comfort blanket she was about to shed. She turned and was met by her mother’s warm smile.

Emotion swelled up in Laura making her throat tight. She’d never gone more than a week or two without seeing her parents. The idea of not seeing them for an entire year, possibly longer, didn’t even compute.

She wrapped her arms around her mum, breathing her in. “Thanks for coming tonight.”

“Wouldn’t have missed it.” Her mother stroked her hair, and Laura clung to her for a little bit longer.

“Come on, you two. Cut it out.” Her father’s gruff voice made Laura smile. He was a handsome man with a full head of dark hair that belied his fifty years.

Her mum stepped aside, and her dad pulled her into an embrace. She burrowed into his chest, absorbing the comfort of his strong arms, the smell of his cologne, the steady beat of his heart.

She’d always been a daddy’s girl, and he’d always been her rock.

She’d been terrified when she came out that would all change, but he’d taken it in the same easy-going manner he took most things in life. Her mother had taken a while to come around, but they’d remained close. Being an only child probably had something to do with that.

Her dad held her by the shoulders. “We’ll see you in the morning.”

Laura nodded, dread settling in her stomach like a block of ice. Saying farewell at the airport was going to be ten times harder than seeing them off tonight.

Faye appeared out of nowhere, her bubbly personality immediately lifting Laura’s spirits.

“Hey, Pete and Diane.” She flung an arm across Laura’s shoulders. “You guys off?”

“Yep.” Laura’s dad nodded. “It’s time for us to leave you kids to it.”

Her mother narrowed her eyes making Laura feel like she was five instead of twenty-five. “Don’t overdo it. You don’t want to go throwing up on the plane.”

“No way.” Faye shook her head adamantly. “If you accidentally flush the toilet while you’re losing your lunch, you’re likely to lose your eyebrows too.” She made a weird sucking sound, cheeks hollowing out.

Her dad folded his arms across his broad chest. “I heard someone got disembowelled by an aeroplane toilet.”

“Okay, okay.” Laura held up her hands. “No flushing the toilet while sitting on it or hanging over it. Got it.”

Her mother shook her head with mirth. “How on earth did bidding you a good night turn to potty talk?”

Faye pointed at her mother.
