Wynter,

Meet me in the library tomorrow after school. Bring your coat.

Cory

The next day I avoid Stella, for fear that Madame Moyer will blame her for talking to me yesterday, near the dining room. Cory, too, for that matter. I’m still upset with him, for taking the leather box from my room. I may just ignore his little note he wrote, too.

My morning chores are done early, so, I sit at my table eating breakfast quietly. During class I confine myself in my own world. At lunchtime, I bring a sandwich and find a spot in a corner of the kitchen on the floor, bringing a book to read to pass the time. I nearly go unnoticed, too, until Cory walks in. I glance up to see a lopsided smile hook the side of his cheek.

“What are you doing sitting on the floor alone?” he inquires. His hair looks tousled, like he has been outside. But he’s still as striking as ever. He can be muddy from head to toe and still melt my heart.

“May I sit with you?”

“I’m not much in the mood for company today,” I say, sneering at him. I am sure he saw the pictures in my head. Besides, the tone in my voice should be a clue.

He invites himself to sit down next to me anyway.

“You haven’t wanted much company all day.”

“Yeah, well, a girl needs space sometimes, you know?”

“Yeah, I know.” He glances at my leg. “I see your brace is off?”

“Blair took it off this morning. It’s good as new.”

“Well, that is good news.”

There is a long silence before he finally says, “I hadn’t any idea that she would take you there.”

“Yeah, well, it wasn’t a pleasant experience, that’s for sure.

“Cheer up,” he says. “She’s gone. Won’t be back until next week.”

“Yeah, right before my birthday.”

“I know.” Then he takes a pencil from the kitchen drawer and writes: “I have a plan.”

“Hey, that’s my book!” I protest, glaring at him.

“Shh,” he says, softly laughing, and erases the words, so it appears the page has never been violated.

“Remember the note I left you in your room?” he asks.

I’m still mad at you, Cory. What do you want?

“Meet me there after class, okay?”

I nod, despite what my gut is telling me. “Sure, I can do that.”

“The second half of class is about to start.” He puts out a hand for me to take. “The day will get better, I promise.”

“You shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep,” I counter.

“Oh, but I can keep this one.”

I shrug off his gesture, saying, “I don’t need your help.” I leave the kitchen, with him following close behind. I’m beginning to feel uncomfortable. Something about Cory feels off.
