Jacob grabbed his new pole from his closet and Keyed himself to Taga Village. From the tree, he set off for Azuriahâs fortress, admiring his pole along the way. Azuriah had given it to him yesterday, and was going to teach him how to fight with it.
It was four inches in diameter, heavy, long, and topped with the usual Shiengol spearhead: the trident with a sun on it. Jacob felt powerful just holding it. He wondered if there was magic in the wood, or if it was just the fact that he was holding a Shiengol weapon.
He checked his watch before knocking on Azuriahâs door, and was glad he did. He was twenty minutes early. Azuriah hated it when he was early and hated it when he was late. Rolling his eyes, Jacob leaned his pole against Azuriahâs doorframe and decided to go see how Mr. Coolidge was doing. It had been a while since heâd visited the school.
He walked past Aldoâs cabin to the huge building where English classes were taught and where Mr. Coolidge and Hayla had their offices.
The moment he entered the place, he could tell something was wrong. And by the amount of shouting and screaming, he knew it would be something he didnât want to get involved in. He was about to turn around and leave when Kevin called his name.
âIâm so glad youâre here,â Kevin said, jogging up to him.
Jacob rubbed the back of his neck. âYeah . . . I was about to leave. I donât like drama.â
âTell me about it,â Kevin muttered.
âWhatâs going on?â
Kevin shook his head. âI really have no idea. Alorenâs been off lately, and the new girlâHaylaâs daughter?âis, well . . . come see.â
Jacob followed Kevin down the hall and into the back of a large room where students sat at desks. Aloren was at the front of the classroom holding chalk and an eraser. She was shouting at Onaly, who was shouting back. The other students were either frozen in shock or had joined the yelling match.
âWow,â Jacob said. âWhat started all this?â He was tempted to cover his ears.
âThey just rub each other wrong,â Kevin said. âYou know how girls get sometimes. Itâs like they were born to be enemies.â
Onaly rose from her desk and walked up to Aloren. Jacob was afraid sheâd hit Aloren, and so started toward the front of the room. But Onaly only said something short and belligerent, judging by the look on Alorenâs face, flipped her hair and turned from the desk. She saw Jacob, and relief spread across her features.
âJacob. Glad youâre here.â
The room fell silent as soon as everyone saw Jacob. He felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle and realized he was prince over these people. He needed to act like it.
He ignored Onaly and looked at Aloren, who also appeared to be relieved. âWhat happened?â
Aloren took a deep breath, apparently calming her frazzled nerves. âOnaly decided to take over teaching for me. Apparently, sheâs a genius when it comes to math.
