Chapter 7

"Brothers, nice to see you again."

"Where is it, Larke? You promised Mama. You gave your word," Jako said.

Toulouse rammed his muscular forearm up against Larke's throat, effectively cutting off his oxygen supply. Larke gasped for breath.

"He can't talk if you choke him," Jako pointed out, always the more reasonable one of the brothers.

Larke gasped for air once Toulouse had removed his arm.

"I need more time," Larke said. "I can't just breeze into the evidence vault and remove the Eye without someone asking questions."

"Mama knows you've made contact with Dwellen. You're being watched, little bro. Did you think no one would notice he spent the night in your apartment last night? What did you tell him? Remember your loyalties, changeling. If not to Mama, then to our clan."

"Our clan is fractured. It has been for decades. We're all that's left."

"We still have power enough to make your life miserable...and Roan's," Toulouse warned.

"I have a job to do," Larke said. "Now leave me to do it," he said as he pulled free of his brothers. "Stay out of my way."

Larke was convinced that whatever power the ancient clans had possessed was no more. They were all fairy tales their mother had told them. Or as good as. Old tales and his brothers were full of bluster that only a gadjo would be foolish enough to believe in these modern times.

"Twenty-four hours," Toulouse said. "Mama said to tell you. Twenty-four hours to put the Eye into her hands." And then as silently as his brothers had appeared, they were gone.

"Fuck," Larke mumbled as he headed for his car. He yanked the car keys out of his pocket, then slid behind the wheel. This was not going to go well. Not for any of them. No way was he giving the Eye to his mother. There was an instinct within him that said that was all wrong. It didn't and couldn't be put into her nefarious keeping, even if he didn't believe there was magic attached to it.

Larke pulled into a parking spot in the parking lot beneath the overpass. He walked along First for several blocks to the antiquary. As he stepped inside, ages past surrounded him. He saw Graham hunched over a large old book at the back of the store. Graham looked up when the bell over the front door dinged.

"Larke, you haven't been in for a while. Some new case you need my assistance with?" Graham asked as he set his glasses down. He carefully closed the book and leaned it upright next to the computer terminal resting on the side of the display case.

Larke grinned. The crusty old curmudgeon was perhaps the one person in Larke's life who did not lie or dissemble about things. He told it straight up, not an untruth in his bones. Maybe that's why Larke liked coming here. It was probably the only place in Seattle that Larke felt he could relax and let his guard down. Sometimes he didn't realize how strong the wall was he'd build around himself, until he walked in here.
