I watched the sun set over the ranch, my mind a tangled mess. It had been a usual, muggy summer day, but with evening came a break from the heat. Fireflies danced in the fields, and it made me smile.

It also reminded me of the man who I couldn't forget no matter how hard I tried.

Trevor had left two weeks ago, and every day I'd missed him. Every day I woke with a sense that something was missing. Something wasn’t the way that it should be. His smile, his voice, the way he kissed me. How he'd danced with me. How he'd given me memories of a night I'd treasure for the rest of my life.

All things that plagued my mind and wouldn’t let me truly enjoy every day to the fullest.

It was strange, how a connection like that had been created so quickly and effortlessly, but he’d made it so easy. He was sweet and kind, yet strong and assertive. Everything I’d ever wanted, and it was all right there in a single man. My instincts begged me to open my phone and text or call him, but I knew better. I did the best I could to keep that from actually happening.

Over the past two weeks, I’d had a long time to think. A long time to think, and still I was just as confused as before. I'd always assumed I'd do the right thing, the expected thing. I would marry a man like Ruben, who I loved but didn't have explosive chemistry with. We'd have children, we'd run the ranch, and we'd be happy.

Not necessarily happy, but satisfied.

I hadn’t really known there was a difference until Trever came along, and part of me wished it still didn’t. Even still… If something was missing in my world built with Ruben, well, life could never be perfect, could it?

I sighed, staring out at the wide-open fields around me. Unwrapping my arms from around my knees, I put my feet on the hard wood of the deck and rocked the porch swing enough to create a bit of a breeze.

Trevor isn't coming back. He'd told me so himself.

That had hurt, I wouldn't lie. The romantic in me had stupidly hoped he'd also recognized our connection and would take me away—from what? My family? Even Ruben, who cared about me despite everything? I had nothing to complain about, that was for sure.

I sighed again.

"Are you out here again?" I heard Abuela ask me in Spanish as she came onto the porch. With a gray-streaked eyebrow raised, she assessed me and then clucked her tongue. "You look terrible, Mija."

I laughed. "Thanks, Abuela."

She gave a sad smile before sitting next to me on the swing. "It wasn't a compliment. You look terrible, and I know why. You miss your man, don't you?"

A blush crawled up my face; I looked away, hoping the light was dim enough that Abuela wouldn't notice the telltale redness. "I don't know what you mean."

She snorted. "You know exactly what I mean.
