By the late 19th century industry had finally arrived in Barcelona, Madrid and some Basque cities, attracting migrants from the countryside and bringing both prosperity and squalid slums to the cities. In rural areas the old problems of underproduction, oligarchic land ownership and mass poverty persisted. Many Spaniards emigrated to Latin America; those who stayed seized eagerly on revolutionary ideas arriving from elsewhere in Europe, and society and politics became increasingly polarised between left and right.
