Later on she decided to get up and look around a little more. She was feeling better; the visions were a lot more manageable.

Renna wanted to sit outside watching the sea and just enjoy being away from Star Haven for a little while, so Jill left her alone as she began pacing around the village.

She didn’t want to admit it to herself, but she was looking for James. She turned corners, exploring the jumbled huts, miscellaneous wooden structures, and dirt streets. There was a wall on one side, and a few watchtowers with people sitting in them. Everyone seemed on edge. Was that because Jill, Renna, and Penny were here, or were they always like that?

There was a larger wooden structure near the heart of the settlement. Jill wandered around the outside of it, and then, just like that, there he was.

His shoulders seemed broader, he was more heavily muscled, and his hair was tinged with gray, but the eyes, the expression, the way he stood was so achingly familiar. He looked so like the past that her own memories floated around her, threatening to envelop her. Friendship, sex, tenderness, fighting, bitter fury, regret…

She started towards him. He saw her, and immediately took off in the other direction.

Jill, heart dropping out of her chest, almost let him go.

Almost.

But it had been over a decade since they’d even seen one another. They had all that history, all that baggage… and he ran away from her? He ran away?

Furious, she sprinted after him. He saw her in pursuit, and shifted into his super-speed.

That was it. She built up strength in her legs, and simply shot out into the jungle after him.

“Jill?!” he shouted, surprised. Then he picked speed and edged away.

Jill, now both infuriated and determined to give him a taste of his own medicine, ran faster and faster. Her strength and stamina seemed to have no end. “You won’t just run away!” she called to James as she breezed past him. His eyes widened as he realized she was not only keeping up, she was faster. To taunt him, she turned around and ran backwards. “Is this what you want? To get away? To run? I can run, too! I can—”

There was a sharp, bright shock of pain and everything went black.
