Chapter Eighteen

Bentley

The ride jostles me around, but the quiet leaves me with my thoughts. It’s a blessing knowing I can carry out my mission in disguise. Getting too close to targets never ends well, especially with someone like Petrov in the mix, but I have anonymity. I know that Ivan recognized me, causing the ominous weight of a target on my back, but they don’t know my identity; so they aren’t able to go after my family. Thank god. I never want my family to pay the price for my career choice.

After driving for three hours, my eyes can’t focus any longer. It’s time to pull over and let them rest, even if it’s for five minutes at a time. Somehow, Kira hasn’t fallen asleep or said a word for a while. Every time I look over and think I’m going to find her asleep, she is just staring out the window.

“We are going to stop for a couple of hours. My eyes are starting to burn,” I say, pulling off the highway to a small, run-down motel in Cold Springs. It’s been a few hours since we left Saint Mary’s, and I can tell Kira is exhausted. As we make our way over to the reception desk, I can’t help but feel intensely aware of all of the eyes watching us as we enter.

It doesn't take long for us to register and get a room key. The clerk behind the counter gives me a suspicious look before handing me our key and telling us not to cause any trouble. She does realize this is one of the best examples of a pay by the hour motel, right? When you have an establishment like this, you have to expect some shady shit to happen. I don’t think we are the ones she needs to be worrying about at all. Kira casts some shade toward the lady before we walk out of the office toward our room.

The sign is only half lit by the highway, which means the beds are probably as sub par as they come, but it’s the best for now. It’s not like we are going to go to a five star hotel. We are trying to stay as off the grid as we can, and paying in cash is only available as shitty motels along the highway. Everyone knows the expensive hotels require a credit card which can be tracked. As soon as we are inside, I lock the deadbolt and turn towards Kira. She looks pale and scared so I give her an encouraging smile before saying “At least you can get some rest - no one will find us here. We have a long day ahead of us. For your safety, we will only be able to stop for a couple of hours, and then we will be right back on the road."

Kira eyes me carefully, probably trying to assess if I’m telling the truth. The look of shock and mistrust on her face is understandable; after all, I did kidnap her at church.
