Chapter 9

Ty

“Dogs,” I grumbled, causing Jennie to laugh. “You know dogs and I don’t get along. I’m never home to take care of one.

“That is true. However, smile for the cameras, because they’re flashing this way.” I lightly pulled her against my side, once more thinking about how great she felt against me and how right it was. Which maybe wasn’t smart. Okay, so, then again, fucking my fake girlfriend wasn’t smart.

But five nights ago, when Brody was sprouting his shit about my girl, I knew I had to have her. And though I did, I’m struggling to find any remorse in me over it. If I was a smart man, it should be there.

“Yeah, yeah, smiling away,” I muttered through clenched teeth, but a smile was in place.

“You know, dogs are great. How come you haven’t done this before?” Every year, the team partners up with the local pet shelters and tries to get all kinds of pets adopted. It’s a great look for the team, and it’s a great way to decrease the animals in these places.

“Too much work.” I tried to keep the grumpy image as best as I could, but something about Jennie’s smile as she watched the dogs just chasing balls and then running up to people, stopped me from being that asshole. I wanted to be, regardless of all the lights flashing, but I just couldn’t be.

So, when she sat down to play with a massive Golden Retriever and a Pitbull, I couldn’t stop myself from sitting down next to her. And when the dogs crawled in her lap, licking her face, and causing her to laugh, I couldn’t explain why I wanted to be a dog. What the hell was going on? Thoughts like this, feelings like this, wasn’t something I ever did. Ask any woman I fucked, they would all tell you how closed off I was.

“You got to get him,” Jennie said between her fits of laughter as the goldish dog kept licking her face.

“Are you going to move in with me to help take care of him?” Never, ever, have I uttered words like that to a woman. Why would I? Relationships, and commitments, weren’t things I ever did, best friend or not. Or fake dating or not. Jennie smiled as she just went on petting the dog, but her eyes were glued to me.

“Do I
