Opening approaches: anthropology as history

We shall be looking at four very traditional and well-known schools of anthropological thought: social evolutionism, historicism, functionalism and structuralism. Certainly, in the history of anthropological thought there are more schools than these four. But I have chosen them because they can be taken as representative of particular patterns of thought, and shared with many more anthropological theories, in the analysis and explanation of cultural differences. To synthesise the history of anthropology in just four theoretical approaches is, needless to say, an over-simplification. But, hopefully, it will enable us to get at the core of what explaining culture is all about.
