Chapter 23

March 31st

“Stop fidgeting.” Cassie looks at me like a deer caught in headlights, her steel eyes wide and vibrant against her black liner. Biting on her red-painted, plump bottom lip, she furrows her brows. “Everything is going to be fine,” I remind her for what feels like the hundredth time this morning.

“I know,” she groans. “Just… what if—”

“We’ve been over this,” I say exhaustedly. I pull her into my lap, her sundress riding up as she straddles me. If I weren’t certain that my nosey siblings are spying on us in the driveway, I’d consider calming her down with one more orgasm. It’s how I was able to settle her nerves enough earlier, so she would finally get dressed and ready to go. Not that I’m complaining.

Since last night, things feel different. While bringing up the past wasn’t exactly something I wanted to do, Jake was right—I needed to let her go. I hadn’t realized how much shit I’ve been holding on to until after spilling my guts. It’s been nine damn years, and this is the first time I’ve let anyone in. How fucking pathetic is that? I thought that night with Cassie was my first time actually living since my parent’s accident. No, I stopped long before that.

Last night, as I watched Cassie sleep in my arms, I continued to really think about my marriage. The more I recalled, the more I realized that relationship had been over prior to us even graduating high school.
