CHAPTER 14

BRIGID

I STARED INTO THE NURSERY, almost afraid to even walk in there for fear of destroying the moment.

The thing was freaking beautiful. In fact, it was beyond beautiful. It was...

“Perfect,” I told him, knowing that I sounded as thankful as I felt. “It’s perfect. The color is perfect. The accents are perfect. How did you know I was thinking of that color?”

“I didn’t,” Levi said, his voice coming from right above my head. “But I went with a color that matched his eyes—or at least the color I think his eyes will end up. So I guess the question is how you knew what color eyes he’d have.”

I bit my lip, my mind freezing up at the undercurrent of the question. The truth was, I’d thought Mav would have the same color of eyes as I did. So I’d assumed that they’d be blue.

The other truth was that Maverick was only a day old at this point and didn’t have any color of eyes. He’d have newborn gray for a couple of months yet, so we wouldn’t know his real eye color for some time.

Which brought me to the third truth: that the color Levi had chosen actually matched his eyes. It was a darker blue than my own icy eyes and matched the center of Levi’s irises perfectly. Not the outer ring, where they turned even darker, but the bright cornflower color.

And that made me wonder exactly how much Levi had guessed. Because he’d bought paint that matched his own eyes and then said he was hoping that it would match Maverick’s eyes one day.

That seemed like an awfully big leap if he wasn’t specifically acknowledging that Mav was half his.

He was giving me an opening, I realized. He might not know it—he might not have guessed that Maverick was his—but he was definitely giving me the perfect space for turning around, threading my arms around his neck, and telling him that I needed to tell him something. Coming clean and telling him the truth.

Finally sharing my secret with someone.

And if I looked at it from a certain standpoint, it would be perfect. I hadn’t been able to get in touch with him before, because I hadn’t had his number or email or address or anything else. Even if I’d wanted to contact him—which I definitely had—I hadn’t had any way of doing it.

But the universe had brought him back into my life. Mine and Maverick’s. It had given me every opportunity for reconnecting with the father of my child and welcoming him into the family. Sort of. If he wanted to.

So why wasn’t I jumping at the chance?

Because I was afraid he wouldn’t want to, I realized abruptly. I didn’t want to tell him because I was afraid he’d reject me. Reject us. And if he did that...

I didn’t know how I’d handle it. I didn’t know if I’d be able to stand it. So I was avoiding the possibility.

I did turn, though, forcing a smile onto my face.
