ANDRÉ: And do you think your plays, or anybody else’s for that matter, are going to make a difference?
PLAYWRIGHT: I don’t know. But wasn’t that the hope you had for your theatre . . . once upon a time? Wasn’t it going to “wake up the Afrikaner and make him think”? Your words!
Anyway, that’s the only thing I can do. Like Marais, the blank page has become my home.
ANDRÉ: Well you’ll be wasting your time, dear boy, as much as I wasted mine. If you are going to write, take my advice and learn how to write good drawing-room farces. That way you will make a lot of money and live happily ever afterwards. That is what I should have done. Wake up the Afrikaner and make him think? Did I really say that? What a fool! Look at them. It’s worse now than when I started out thirty-five years ago. The Guardians of the volk have locked up this country and thrown away the key. If you think they are going to allow any changes you’ve got another guess coming.
PLAYWRIGHT: If that was true, if I really believed there was nothing we could do to change it . . . I don’t know. . . maybe it would be time then for a suicide pact between us.
ANDRÉ (Sharply): Don’t say that lightly!
PLAYWRIGHT (Also heating up): I’m not. Oh for God’s sake, André, all I’m trying to say . . . oh never mind.
(A few seconds of strained silence between the two men. The Playwright breaks the moment.)
I’m sorry, André. All I wanted to do in coming backstage was to tell you that your performance tonight was wonderful. (Looks at his watch) I must be on my way now.
