Trott gained von Papenâs assistance, but was not able to bring the Ambassador around to full, explicit allegiance with the Kreisau Circle. Ambassador von Papen delegated the contact effort with Earle, and all subsequent meetings with the FDRâs emissary to Baron von Lersner.147 As we have discussed, this all seems to have been synchronized through the efforts of Abwehr-Istanbul Chief, Leverkuehn.
Baron von Lersner had a long and distinguished diplomatic career, while having the unenviable and domestically ignoble position of heading the German delegation to the Paris Peace Conference. His presidency of the âGerman Orient Societyâ in Istanbul served two purposes. It kept the Baron safe from Nazi ethnic purity scrutiny (as he was believed to have a Jewish ancestor) and allowed him to serve as an unofficial channel of communication for von Papen.
Von Lersner made contact with Earle and the two men had a series of intermittent meetings that spanned more than a year.
Returning to Earleâs published record from March 1960 in Human Events:
Although I was aware of the menace of Russian expansion and felt that the plan had great possibilities. I knew little more than most people in the allied camp about the extent of the anti-Nazi movement in Germany. Among those who sought to overthrow the dictator long before the war began to go against Germany were General Ludwig Von Beck, onetime head of the German General Staff, Herbert Bismarck, State Secretary of the Prussian Ministry and grandson of the âIron Chancellor,â and Heinrich Brüning, former Chancellor and the leading Catholic intellectual in Germany.
My first contact with the anti-Hitlerites came a few days after I checked into my Istanbul hotel. While in my room one morning, I was visited by a short, middle-aged man in civilian clothes, who identified himself as Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. Canaris told me he was disturbed by the Allied policy of unconditional surrender, and that it meant nothing but good for the Russians and ill for the Western nations. He exclaimed that those in Germany who felt they could get rid of Hitler if they could deal with the Americans had very little bargaining power left. âThis means war to the end, the destruction of Germany as a military power, and the emergence of Russia as the dominating force in Europe,â Canaris said.
