FIFTEEN

Professor saw Jade’s photo half an hour after it posted thanks to a head’s up from Tam, who despite having her own crises, had managed to divert some of the Myrmidons’ resources to the search.

“Rome?” He muttered, double-checking the metadata to make sure the picture really had been sent from where it appeared to have been shot. “She was supposed to be in Houston.”

Houston was where he had spent the previous night and all of the day so far, waiting and hoping for Jade to either make contact with him, or pop up on Purcell’s radar.

“Why Rome?” It was a rhetorical question; only Jade would be able to answer. “How did she get there?”

“Can’t help you with that,” Tam answered. “She didn’t clear customs anywhere in the Eurozone. She must be getting help from someone. Maybe she’s working with that cult you heard about?”

“More likely, she’s still their captive. Don’t you see? This photo was a cry for help. They’re keeping her under wraps.”

“She doesn’t exactly looked ‘wrapped’ to me,” Tam replied.

“‘Meet me here.’ That’s for me, Tam. You need to get me there. ASAP.”

Tam equivocated for about a minute, but then agreed to make the arrangements, which was why, fourteen hours later, he was standing in almost exactly the same place Jade had been standing when she’d been photographed.

During that interval, he had learned a little more about the picture. It had been taken with an iPhone that belonged to a William Craig of Muncie, Indiana, who was presently vacationing in Rome as part of a group tour.

After a quick background check on the man, which yielded nothing of interest, Professor called the phone and, after identifying himself as Special Agent Purcell from DHS, questioned Craig about the circumstances of the photo.

“I already told the cops everything I know about it,” Craig protested. “This chick just came up to me out of the blue like she knew me and asked me to take her picture. Then, before I knew what was happening, she took off running with a couple of cops on her tail. Never saw her again. Too bad, too. I was in the mood for some spicy Chinese food, if you know what I mean.”

“Be glad you didn’t get a taste of that,” Professor had said, suppressing the urge to tell the man what he really thought of the comment. “We don’t call her the Black Widow Killer for nothing.”

Craig gulped nervously and Professor hung up on him.

He had a pretty good idea of why Jade had done what she had. It seemed evident that she had slipped the leash of her captors and had reached out to him in the only way she knew how. He was troubled by Craig’s mention of ‘cops,’ and checked again to see if Jade—or anyone matching her general description—had been picked up. Not only was the response negative, but there was no mention of either city police or Carabinieri officers being involved in an incident near the Colosseum.
