CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

‘Don’t think much of your ready meal,’ Danny said in Hamish’s kitchen.

‘Yes, quite. I don’t think we’ll find much here. He obviously knew what he was doing,’ said Paul. ‘Your source for this guy … do you think he tipped him off?’

‘No, absolutely not.’

‘Ok. Sorry, had a rough night. The prime minister and cabinet are going nuts over the explosions in London and the attack on our oldest bank. They want results yesterday,’ said Paul.

‘That’s why you’re paid the big bucks. Mind if I have a little look around?’ Danny said, poking a finger into the burnt-out microwave.

‘Knock yourself out,’ Paul said, stepping out to answer his ever-ringing mobile.

Danny walked through the flat, checking cupboards, draws and a wardrobe before clambering out the window to investigate Cambell’s escape route. In the garden he climbed the ladder and looked over the wall. John Cummings paced around below.

‘What we got out here then, John?’

‘Oh, hi, Danny. Yeah, good choice of location. Plenty of exit routes and the train station. There’s around six different ways to get out of here,’ said John, pointing.

Danny looked around in silence. Something struck him as odd. ‘Any of these parked cars arrived or left since you’ve been here?’

‘Er, no. No one’s moved. Why?’

‘There’s no parking spaces for forty, maybe fifty metres in either direction, right? You’d think this guy would have his car parked ready, what with the microwave and ladder all set up for a quick getaway. Right here by his drop point. He wouldn’t exit on foot. That’s way too dangerous. And he wouldn’t use the train station – he might get stuck on a platform with nowhere to run. Plus, there’s lots of CCTV,’ said Danny, jumping down from the wall. As he landed, a small stab of pain reminded him that his ribs hadn’t fully healed.

‘You think it’s staged to look like an escape point?’ said John. He looked around and nodded. ‘Perhaps someone was waiting for him.’

‘Not enough time. He saw us coming and burned the place. No trail, and out the door seconds before we came in.’

Danny crossed the road and looked back at the brick wall and houses.

‘Has Paul got his earpiece in, John?’

‘Yeah, he’s just been on it.’

‘Get him up the ladder to the top of this wall, mate.’

Soon Paul’s head appeared over the wall. ‘What’s up?’

‘You checked this address first, right? False name, yeah?’ said Danny.

‘Yes, it’s under Brian Dobson,’ Paul said, looking puzzled.

‘Rented through a letting agent?’

‘Right. Where are we going with this?’ Paul said impatiently.

‘That flat’s not lived in. It’s just a base for doing business. This guy’s clever, probably ex-counterintelligence, good at making you think he’s one place when he’s another, that sort of thing. Get on to the agent and find out if any other properties were rented on this street around the same time as this one. It’ll be under a different name but definitely at the same time.’

‘On it.’ Paul ducked back down the ladder.
