Chapter 20

Two fire trucks and three police cars were already on the scene when Michelle eased the ambulance closer to the wreck. A number of spotlights glowed just down the ridgeline where a yellow box truck was jammed against a large oak tree. The flick of the colored lights was like a dance club, reds, and blues, with yellow from an arriving wrecker.

Molly Gordon approached the ambulance. “Michelle, can they get another bus?”

“Not for twenty minutes, why?” Michelle asked.

“This one is going to be tough. It’s Robin’s car.” Molly cleared her throat. “They’re still working on extraction and we need some EMS support. I’m not sure Kevin can do it by himself.”

Michelle steeled her voice. “He won’t have to. I want to do it. I don’t trust anyone more than myself. What’s the situation?”

“Are you sure? It’s bad, Shell.” Molly’s eye’s pinched.

“Positive.” Michelle grabbed a box of medical supplies and then cautiously stepped down the hill toward the car. Molly was right. Yellow panel pieces were ripped into chunks and lay along the route. The frame of the car was visible as the firemen worked to cut pieces of metal from the roofline. She froze. Sight of the ragdoll form of Robin leaning over the steering column, a streak of blood down the side of her face, took her breath. She clamped her eyes shut for a moment to regain focus.

Kevin said from behind her, “I’ll go get the board and some blankets.”

Michelle snapped back into her regular protocol and set down the box of equipment she still held. “Can I approach?”

Dennis Worley, the fire chief, held up a hand. “Hang on guys, come on over. I think we may need to stabilize before we cut the last beam unless you think we can pull her straight up.”

“That would be the fastest way,” she said, studying the wreckage. She leaned in close. “Robin. Can you hear me? It’s Michelle. You’re going to be fine. I just need to check things out and then we’ll take you to the hospital.” There was a lot of blood but not unusual for a head cut. The side glass was shattered, and Robin was pinned in between the steering wheel and the door. Michelle looked at the car. The side impact crushed the passenger side. Robin was very lucky, and she wore her seat belt. Michelle popped on a flashlight and looked over Robin’s form. She reached in to check her pulse. Fast but steady. She seemed warm enough. “Robin?”

Kevin spoke behind her. “Side impact is a possible pelvis fracture. How’s the left leg look?”

I know, I know. She took a slow breath. “I can’t tell, but no blood. I doubt compound. Let’s try to wrap her before the move.” Michelle slid the foam collar around her neck and tugged the Velcro strap into place. She ripped open a package of gauze pads and plastered several on Robin’s head. She efficiently wrapped the bandage into place. She cut the seat belt in three places, allowing Robin to slide forward.
