The infected at the opposite end growled, then smiled, the setting sun lighting up his grotesque face. Veronica froze, fear tightened her already swollen throat. Seconds felt like hours as she watched black ooze slip through his parted lips. She was mesmerized by the horrid sight and missed the hand that snaked out and clasped her on the arm. The sharp tug brought her tight up against the grill as the smile inched closer.

At the last moment, Veronica muttered, “Not again.”

She closed her eyes and felt a spray of liquid splash against her face. Snapping her eyes open, she witnessed surprise widen the infected’s black eyes before it fell over to the ground.

“Veronica...Veronica, can you hear me?” Cody shook Veronica’s shoulder, worried by the look on her face.

Veronica slowly shifted her head to Cody, “It knew you killed it. How can that be?” Veronica reached up and wiped the slime that was slowly dripping from her face. “There is something really wrong with those two, it was like they were thinking.”

Cody didn’t want to agree, the idea making him sick, “We need to find a way out of here.” He looked along the fence for another gate but didn’t find one, “We’re going to have to jump the fence, can you do that?”

Cody looked a Veronica’s beaten body and was amazed at her strength. At the snap of wood, Cody reached his hand out and started to pull her to the fence, preparing to boost her over but the sight of the body that was already halfway through the fence told him that they didn’t have much time.

Veronica looked down at the propane grill, “Do you have a knife?”

Cody pulled out his hunting knife from his boot, “What’s your plan.”

The infected punched his head through the wood and let out a hungry shriek.

Veronica swiped the blade through the hose connecting the propane tank to the grill, pulling the five-gallon tank from the shelf it sat on and handed it to Cody, “When I say, twist the knob open and toss it over the fence.”

Veronica used the knife as tore strips of fabric from the lounge chairs, wrapping them around the poker. Grabbing she lighter fluid and the fire stick and got into position.

Veronica couldn’t tell how many were behind the fence, she could only guess by the sway that there were more than she cared to have this close.

“Open the tank and toss it over the fence,” Veronica instructed.

Cody stared at the tank then at the items in Veronica’s hands and smiled. He opened the tank as fast as he could and threw it over. Veronica waited a few minutes, using the poker to jab at the infected that was now being pushed through from behind. Veronica could barely smell the faint scent of rotten eggs over the putrid scent of the infected. When she did, she lit the poker up and waited for the boom.
