By the time night fell again, Hasse had finished his planning. He’d been ensconced in a meeting with the abbot for about an hour, telling Brittany that he needed to make some final preparations. She had been left staring at the dull whitewashed walls, trying to work out why they felt so unusual.

“Have you lost something, zonjë?” the same bearded man asked her as he approached.

She shook her head. “No, just waiting, and…”

“And?”

She waved at the walls. “Something’s not right here. It feels like there should be something more to all this, but it’s not there. Does that make… any… sense?”

“You are very aware of things around you, a good habit for an apprentice to someone like the Professor,” he told her. “The walls are whitewashed in case we are ever visited by the Sigurimi if they can ever find their way here, which I doubt. Under the paint are the original frescoes, the art of our predecessors. It waits for the day when it can be shown again.”

She looked at the wall again. “Everyone seems to be waiting for a great day. Everyone seems to think the future will magically get better.”

The monk shook his head. “If we don’t think that, why would we go on? We must hope for a brighter future. Otherwise, we have no reason to do anything but act on our own base instincts. I would rather live in hope and be wrong.”

She was still thinking about that when Hasse walked out of the Abbot's rooms.

“All done,” he said. “The monks will pass our message on and get us the transport we need. We just need to travel.”

She sighed. “To another library?”

He shook his head, grinning at her. “Of no. No more time for study. Now is the time for action.”
