CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

“Have you seen Charlotte?” Todd asked as he rushed into Reece’s hotel room, leaving the door open. “She’s not in her room and she isn’t downstairs either.”

“No, I haven’t.” Reece frowned at Todd and stood with hands on hips. “Have you tried her cell?”

“What do you think? Of course I have and it’s ringing inside her room. Do you know anyone who leaves their phone behind when they go out?”

Something unsettling slithered in the pit of Reece’s gut. “Did anything look out of place to you?”

“Not that I noticed. Why, what are you thinking?” His heart rate ticked up a notch.

“I’m not sure. Let’s go take a look.”

The pair hurried down the hallway to Charlotte’s room.

“Here. Look at this.” Reece pointed to the rift in the wooden doorjamb and turned to look at Todd. “The lock has been forced. If you weren’t looking for it you wouldn’t be aware of it.”

“You’re right, I didn’t see that.” He sighed. “As a cop I should have.”

“You didn’t see it because you weren’t expecting her not to be here.”

A worried expression crossed the ex-detective’s face. “Do you think Dracula...?”

“Yeah, I do. And that means he’s taken her with him.”

“Hell, Reece, what are we going to do?”

Andre came along the hallway. “What’s going on?”

Reece’s concerned frown met his friend’s inquisitive stare. “It looks like Dracula’s taken Charlotte again.”

“What?!” Andre pushed open the unlocked door and the three rushed inside.

Reece crossed the room and picked up Charlotte’s pistol off the floor. “She must have tried to defend herself.” He checked the clip. “But she didn’t get a shot off.” He set the weapon on the dresser beside her purse and picked up her phone. “She didn’t get a call, either.”

“We’re going after them, right?” Todd crossed the room and gazed out of the window, praying she was all right. The inky night seemed ominous now that Charlotte was missing.

“If I had the resources I would fly out tonight, but I don’t,” Reece told him.

Todd spun around. “We have to do something. He’ll kill her if we don’t. Or worse, turn her into a... a bloodsucking monster.” His eyes moved to Andre. “Sorry.”

“It’s ok. I wouldn’t wish immortality on anyone.” He walked over to his friend. “I’ll talk to Jacques.”

“No!” Reece was adamant.

“Yes.” Todd crossed the room to the pair. “We have to go after him, rescue Charlotte, and finish what we came here to do.”

Reece let out a heavy sigh. “I’m already indebted to Jacques...”

“I don’t care.” Todd’s face flushed with anguish and anger. “We’re obligated to help her. She’s a part of this team.”

“There’s no question about that but there has to be another way. I don’t want to owe anything more to Jacques.”

“What other way?” Todd folded his arms. “You said yourself you don’t have the resources so how are we going to get there?”

Reece ran the idea around his brain. He didn’t like it but Todd was right. His gaze moved from the ex-detective to his friend. “Ok. Ask him.” He knew he had no other option, but at what cost?
