CHAPTER 33

Riordan Close was an exclusive development of mock-Tudor detached homes. Helen surveyed the sweeping block-paved driveways, the immaculate black front doors, the double garages and sparkling latticed windows.

‘Clearly sex pays,’ Pemberton said under his breath as they stood under the wide porch of number 19 and rang the bell.

The door was answered by a woman in black jeans and a loose white T-shirt. Blonde hair swept back from her face in a high ponytail. ‘Can I help you?’

Children’s voices carried down the stairs. Loud and shrill. Helen held up her badge. ‘We’re looking for a Mr Will Sheridan,’ she said.

Alarm fluttered across the woman’s face. ‘Why do you want to speak to him?’

‘And you are?’

‘Emma. His wife.’ A crash sounded from above. She glanced up and frowned.

‘It’s in connection with a case we’re working on,’ Helen said. ‘Is he home?’

Emma invited them in and they squeezed past a mountain of suitcases piled in the hallway.

‘Going somewhere?’ Pemberton asked.

‘Just got back twenty minutes ago, hence the commotion.’ Another glance up. ‘We got special permission to take the kids out of school for a family wedding. To be honest, I’ll be glad when they go back.’

‘Anywhere nice?’

‘Sorrento.’

Pemberton pulled a face at Helen as Emma motioned for them to follow her down the hallway, past the stairs to a door on the left.

‘Will,’ she said, knocking once. A man looked up from a desk as she opened the door. He was short and bespectacled with thinning fair hair spiked on his head, and a bird-like face that glowed red from the sun. The grey polo shirt he wore hung off his bony shoulders.

‘The police are here to see you.’

Will swivelled in his chair.

Another thud hit the ceiling. ‘Excuse me,’ Emma said and rushed off.

The room housed a desk and a chair. An aquarium of bright-coloured guppies sat beneath the small window at the end.

‘What’s this about?’ Will said, nudging his glasses up his nose.

‘Is there somewhere we can talk?’ Helen asked. There was barely enough floor space for them all to stand in there.

He guided them through to a spacious front room and indicated for them to sit on one of the sofas. Another aquarium, of cichlids, stood in the corner.

Emma reappeared at the door. ‘Sorry about that,’ she said. ‘Can I get you a tea, or a coffee?’

They declined. Helen waited until the door closed before she settled into the sofa. ‘Mr Sheridan, we’re here to ask you about your website, Adult Services For You,’ she said.

Will’s face tightened. He immediately looked to the door.

His wife doesn’t know, Helen thought. Interesting.

‘There’s nothing illegal about it,’ he said. ‘It’s all legit.’

‘I’m not suggesting otherwise,’ Helen said. ‘But we are investigating the murders of two women, and we think the killer found them on your website. They both have profiles posted there.’

Will’s face drained of colour. ‘W-what?’

‘You’re not suggesting you didn’t know?’

‘No, I didn’t. I’m just back from two weeks in Italy. I haven’t seen the news.’

‘You don’t manage the website while you are away?’

‘It pretty much manages itself.
