CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

The meeting was over. Phil collected his notes and left. Maddie felt some of the pressure leaving her chest. She had worried the conversation would be like an interrogation, not the casual, comforting way Sam led it.

“Are you okay with all of this?” Sam asked, looking concerned.

“Yes,” Maddie replied. “I just hope Phil finds something out. After talking to the police and them thinking I’m an airhead and liar, I’m feeling kind of unsure that we’ll get any more information.”

Logan leaned closer into Maddie’s space. “The police aren’t always right. When we go there, maybe we’ll learn more about what happened. Besides, I’m sure you’d like to see your dad and friend,” he said in an attempt to make her feel better.

“That’s true.” Seeing the two people she cared most about would be nice, even if revisiting the crime site was making her pulse race. Maddie knew he was trying to bolster her spirits.

Sam stood and declared, “All right then. It’s settled. I’ll have Marcia make reservations for you.” She cocked her head. “I know you’d probably like to stay with your father, but it would be better if you didn’t.”

“No problem,” Maddie replied, thinking aloud. “Dad only has two bedrooms, and I know he doesn’t want me sleeping with Logan.”

Logan turned to look at her, his mouth open in surprise. Holy crap! Did she just say that out loud?

Of course, she did. Wasn’t that her MO—speaking before thinking?

She blushed and quickly tried to backtrack. “What I meant was that dad’s house is small, and Logan would have to sleep on the floor in the living room.”

Sam smirked. “I understood what you’re saying.”

They walked out to a mostly cloudy day. It had been sunny when they left the building. Maddie hoped that wasn’t an omen of what was to come.

“Oh, do we have time to try that coffee shop you like? I really need a pick-me-up.”

“Sure. Let’s go.”

He led her down the block to the Roasted Bean. The quaint coffee shop was not far from KnightGuard Security. Maddie loved the orange and green neon sign of a coffee cup, a throwback to the 1950s—another excellent idea for pictures. She could do a whole book of unusual spots in Black Pointe. Her heart raced and not in anticipation of being interrogated. It was exciting and a challenge. She felt invigorated by the possibilities.

They walked inside, and Maddie knew her mouth had opened. The inside of the coffeehouse was a contradiction. Maddie expected a worn coffee shop with booths, but what she saw was modern and sleek.

Black marble tables with upholstered metal chairs were placed in the middle of the floor and by the window. A long, black, geometric-patterned banquette was along one wall with chairs facing it. A giant abstract mural of people drinking coffee was on the opposite wall. Soft jazz was playing in the background. The sleek, light wooden coffee bar held large silver coffee machines, and pastries and other delights were showcased behind a glass partition. There was humming and whizzing, music, and laughter.
